IAV-8 Buccaneer - VTOL Command-SAR Aircraft

Description
Type:
Command and Control/SAR VTOL Aircraft

Max Speed:
500km/h

Range:
300km at 300km/h
160km at 500km/h

Description

A medium, command and control VTOL aircraft also equipped for SAR duties. The aircraft can be used as a mobile command station for controlling compatible sea vehicles remotely, or as an airborne radio relay station to relay radio signals between other compatible vehicles and a central command facility, thereby doubling the effective radio range.

It can also be employed on SAR missions thanks to onboard medical equipment and winched harnesses for remote rescue.

The aircraft is well capable of short takeoffs but VTOL is recommended.

Operation

The aircraft uses a combination of WASD controls for VTOL flight and mouse control for STOL/level flight. VTOL and autopilot/hands-off altitude is also controlled via adjustable set altitude instead of direct input.

Master power and radios is on by default.

  • Turn the engines on.
  • (Optional) Turn the Throttle Limiter on, this will limit minimum throttle to the minimum level for stable VTOL flight (blue bar on the throttle display).
  • Use hotkeys 1 and 2 to adjust set altitude. When landing, lower the set altitude gradually for a soft landing.
  • Use WASD to pitch and roll in VTOL mode, press hotkey 5 to turn on mouse control and use the mouse to yaw.
  • When at sufficient altitude, press hotkey 6 to switch to STOL mode for level flight. Use the mouse to pitch and steer. If mouse control is turned off during level flight, the aircraft will level out at the set altitude.
  • Use the Up/Down arrow keys to trim mouse control pitch for a better view.
  • Use hotkeys 3 and 4 to adjust throttle. Lower throttle before switching back to VTOL again. If the throttle limiter is on, just decrease throttle all the way, it will not go lower than the minimum VTOL level.

To fly out of a hangar in VTOL, increase set altitude to about 3m (if terrain following is on).

Autopilot

The aircraft uses a straightforward GPS autopilot system for automated VTOL and level flight. Simply input the waypoint coordinates, turn the autopilot on, and adjust set altitude and throttle as needed.

The autopilot will remain stationary when below 10m off the ground, turn towards it's waypoint above 10m, fly towards it in VTOL mode when above 25m, and switch to STOL mode above 60m. It will hover at it's waypoint when reached.

Check the STOL indicator when landing under autopilot control. Manual control may have been in STOL mode before autopilot was turned on, switch it off (hotkey 6) before turning the autopilot off.

Radio Control

The aircraft can be remotely controlled from a compatible command station (see links below). Every vehicle uses specific radio frequencies, unless set otherwise. For a list of frequencies, see the command stations' Workshop pages or notes near radio panels ingame.

Default frequencies are used when keypad inputs is set to zero.

When using a command station to set waypoint coordinates, press the "Transmit Waypoint" button to transmit the data back to the aircraft. Orders are stored onboard via this method so that the aircraft will continue on route should radio contact be lost.

Using the Relay Radios

The onboard relay radios can be used to either relay radio signals between a command station and a compatible sea vehicle, or used for controlling a compatible sea vehicle remotely from the aircraft itself.

The slave radios will be tuned in to the NS Akkad tanker's frequencies by default. To control the Striker-26F boat, enter it's frequencies instead. Default frequencies are used when keypad inputs is set to zero. The master radios do not have default frequencies.

  • At the command station, enter a unique set of frequencies for the air radios. For example: 10 receive and 20 transmit.
  • On the aircraft, turn on the relay radios.
  • Tune in the master transmit radio to the same frequency as the command station's receive radio (10).
  • Tune in the master receive radio to the same frequency as the command station's transmit radio (20).
  • Toggle between Command/Relay Mode for controlling the ship from the aircraft or relaying signals between the ship and command station.

Updated
-Slightly increased minimum VTOL thrust setting.
-Radio controls added for the ramp and harness winches, also added winch camera (use the "Switch Camera" button on command stations to cycle between forward, downward and winch cameras). Useful for picking yourself up without having to land.

a friend of mine is working on a project called: Project Thunderbirds. hes trying to build every single vehicles from the show into the game

It's the strangest thing really. I don't know Thunderbirds, heard about it but never watched it. So I looked it up, and indeed, this resembles a slimmed down version of Thunderbird 2.

Then I scrolled down and saw Thunderbird 4. Now if you take my Skrat minisub and paint it yellow, it's another resemblance.

Seems I am unknowingly building up Thunderbirds here...
