Shoddy Firearms Rebalanced

Pikkio's Shoddy Firearms extensions for Kenshi

Description
I think that the Shoddy Firearms is the only firearms mod which has sense within the world of Kenshi, but it was a bit unbalanced (guns and ammos were too cheap, too powerful, and too easy to research and to craft), so with this mod I've tried to rework and tweak the firearms cost/values, as well as researches and production chains.

I strongly recommend to use this mod along with the Shoddy Firearms Dissemination Patch, so that ammos and guns can be found around the world in shops and on some npc too.

List of Changes:
  • reworked the cost and strength of the Shoddy Firearms so that they are more balanced compared to vanilla crossbows (generally increased their price a lot, modified the ingredients needed to produce them, reduced the damage and slightly tweaked some other values)

  • crafting guns is more complex/expensive and requires Firearm Parts (Spring Steel + Hinge) and Steel Bars.

  • added various storages related to this production chain. Ammos can be stored in vanilla bolt-box or in dedicated storage boxes.

  • rebalanced the researches related to firearms (costs and requirements) so that it's more challenging/rewarding to reach them all, and doesn't allow to have very strong weapons too early.

Tech Tree Notes
In order to craft Flintlocks you need to unlock Tech Level 3 first (and then use a Research Bench level 3).
Then you need to research:
1. "Boom Boom Boom" (from Interactive World, to unlock blackpowder) under "Survival" in the tech menu
2. "Flintlock Crafting" under "Smithing" in the tech menu

at that point you can build the "Ammos Bench" and the "Firearms Bench".
You will need Iron Plates and Blackpowder to craft ammos. And to craft guns you will need Steel bars and Firearm Parts (hinge, spring steel, wood log).

then when you've researched "Flintlock crafting 2" and "Flintlock crafting 3" and you have unlocked Tech Level 4, you can use a research bench level 4 to research the "Musket Crafting" techs and be able to craft the more advanced guns (they will become available to craft in the Firearms Bench) and their ammos (in the Ammos Bench).

FOOT NOTES

If you are using Interactive World, instead of this mod you should install my other mod which introduces the same tweaks but it also integrates with Interactive World and uses Blackpowder to produce Ammos:

in that case you might also want to check out my other mods for Interactive World:

More Sensible Interactive World Nutrition
More Realistic Blackpowder Recipe
Interactive World - Rope Crafting
Interactive World - Extended Carbon
Interactive World - Poop extended

Please let me know in the comments if there is something that you would like to change or something broken.
And please don't forget to like or favorite if you're enjoying this Mod! :)

Hi @CapnZaq! What is the precise problem that doesn't let you research it? I double checked and my mods are not editing the Flintlock Crafting 3 so there might be something else going on... Looking at the settings, before you can do Flintlock 3 you must research both Flintlock 2 and also "Steel Bars", which is another research and it's different from the object "Steel bars". Maybe that's the confusion?

Of course! Just letting you know I cant research flintlock crafting 3. I think its because ingame its 'Steel bars' but you spelled it as 'Steel Bars'
Would it be possible to fix?

@rachel I don't know exactly how they compare but for what I read in the description of tha other mod it seems that they increased the damage of firearms, while my mod is lowering it a bit (as well as increasing costs and materials needed for crafting them). Though my mod also reworks the tech tree needed to craft guns and ammos, so you might want to use both. I think the mods should work togheter without breaking, but you'll have to see what kind of values you'll get by mixing the 2 patches. Maybe try both with the other one first or with mine first, to see what is the result that fits your taste better.

Compared to the CANF patch for Shoddy guns, how does this compare?

Would it be possible to use both patchs? (with the other later in the load order i imagine) or it is not needed?

I did some research for the real recipe to craft blackpowder. Turns out that it's made with Saltpeter, Sulfur and Charcoal (all available in game with Interactive World). The default recipe from IW is just Saltpeter and Sulfur in equal parts, while in reality the vast majority of the recipe is Saltpeter.

So I've created a simple patch that changes the ingredients for Blackpowder to match the real recipe. For who is using Shoddy Firearms into Interactive World, I recommend trying out this other patch too: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3406249231

then regarding the suggestions for alternatives to blackpowder, I don't think there is the need to find a way to produce some other animal/plant based combustible material to use for ammos. Blackpowder is a fairly simple product that can already be made from naturally occurring resources, both in game and in real life. I mean that humans didn't need to reach some very advanced technology/knowledge to produce gunpowder, so I believe it's totally lore friendly that someone has managed to produce blackpowder (from sulfur and saltpeter) as it makes sense that those resources are present in Kenshi's world too. If anything, it's the technology to build guns and ammos which could be slightly not lore friendly. But if we accept that someone managed to re-invent some primitive guns, then there shouldn't be any problem believing that they also learned how to make gunpowder. ;)

regarding the price of ammos, you surely have some other mod that changes the values of the ingredients for ammos/bolts (which then causes the price to be different), because in my game the regular bolts' value (when you sell) is around 250 and the gun ammos' value is the double. In any case in the default mod, the gun ammos require iron plates, not copper plates as you said.
