Next War Vietnam

Description
For over 2000 years the Chinese have tried to dominate their neighbors to the south. The last time was 1979 when the PRC invaded Vietnam in response to the latter's invasion and occupation of Cambodia. That war lasted about four weeks before China withdrew, having declared its mission accomplished.

Now, the old foes are at it once again. Sparring over the resource rich areas of the South China Sea, both sides have been slowly edging toward the precipice of war. That day has now come.

Next War: Vietnam is the fifth game in the Next War Series. This game returns the action to Asia and the powderkeg surrounding the South China Sea. This time the Chinese don't intend a limited, punitive expedition; they intend to squash the burgeoning threat from their southern border once and for all and prove, through force of arms, that the South China Sea is theirs. Building on the naval rules showcased Next War: Taiwan, players will have a chance to fight over the Spratly and Paracel Islands once again, as well as the mountainous jungle of North Vietnam.

If the U.S. gets involved, it might finally land troops in Haiphong Harbor and march on Hanoi, albeit as a relief force and an ally to its former enemy. The question is what will the rest of the region do? Will they join a side or stay neutral?

Included is every player aid needed to properly play the game, as well as every compatible supplemental piece. There are currently no official Insurgency scenarios with Vietnam, but counters have been provided for players who wish to make their own.

If you are new to the series I suggest playing Next War: India-Pakistan uploaded by another creator here:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2638789212&searchtext=next+war
easier to play and learn due to not having to worry about naval units, and its much more conventional setting.
This workshop upload also includes the optional alternate advanced air system from supplemental 1, if you wish you can save the parts available there and load it on this game.

Some of the reinforcement numbers on the markers can be difficult to read due to image compression, in a playtest game I was able to place all of them in their appropriate location, but if you have difficulty it may help to check out the image gallery on the Board Game Geek website. as high quality scans of all the counter sheets have been uploaded there and may help with referencing the correct numbers

If you notice any issues or errors with the game feel free to report and I will try to fix them.

So now that I've posted both Next War Korea and Next War Vietnam, some Next War fans might wonder if I'll do the rest (with the exception of India Pakistan as a perfectly good version already exists from another person linked above). And that is the eventual goal to do both Next War Poland and Next War Taiwan (as the current version posted by someone else in 2016 is rather outdated now). The reason for doing Korea and Vietnam is that I own the physical copies of both games, however, I do not own Poland or Taiwan. Those would be difficult to do soon as I would only be able to use the Vassal modules as reference. Another obstacle is that both Taiwan and Poland are receiving 2nd Edition updates soon so it would be somewhat wasteful to spend time recreating those games and have that be obsolete.

Nice job!

Thanks man. I figured out how to improve the counter resolution a lot. You need to resize the Pngs from VASSAL from like 98x98 pixels to like 480x480. It makes reading the counters soo much easier. If you look at the combined Pacific module, the counters are using the upgraded graphics

Sorry I was ill for the past few weeks and forgot to respond, but I see you posted an up to date version of NWT and the combined Pacific theater so you figured things out, great job on both of those!

Yo Flergnerg, I am trying to make a board like the ones you used for Korea and Taiwan. I tried just cloning yours, but the image doesn't adjust the aspect properly. Mine is 8050p x 4674p, so it kinda stretches it out. How do you go about adjusting it?

Good catch, The Amph counters have been updated
Johanski Mar 8, 2022 @ 11:09pm
Hey, just a heads up, the Amph counters that come with NWV are supposed to be numbered 1,2,3,4 because you can base the USMC F35Bs/AV8s off of them and they use the CVBG box in the air display
