RMS Glasgow 1878

Description
RMS Glasgow was ordered in 1878 for the Montrose Packet Navigation Company as the first modern liner for the company. Unlike previous ships, this ship was not a side wheeler, but instead boasted the single screw. She was a fine ship for her time, though she was only outclassed within a year from the Guion Line's new SS Arizona entering service in 1879. She has a capacity for 124 steerage passengers spread across men, women and families and 28 saloon class passengers. Her forward saloon is brightly illuminated by fine oil lamps, held up proudly by golden decorated supports. Her saloon is also benefitting from being as wide as the whole vessel, not too common on older steamers, with many large portholes allowing light into the room. Adorning the ceiling are fine wooden beams that are in a beautiful pattern, and two skinny skylights running along the deckhouse with a much larger skylight in the center. Her staircase, albeit a little crowded, has fine wooden railings and steps that lead from the saloon deck up to the hurricane deck, surrounded by white planked walls. Down her long hallways are cabins, with comfy bedding provided along with a cushioned chair, and a wash basin. Aft lays the grand saloon, similar to the forward, but more decorated. Two bookshelves lay in the center, which provides excellent readings for both children and adults, and fine mahogany decorates the walls. Golden mirrors lay above the convenient cabinet for storage. Further aft is a larger staircase with mahogany panels on the upper level, and the pursers office to feed the passenger's desires and concerns. In the very bow is the open, airy steerage for males only, and aft for protection is where the single women and families are located. The steamship is a fine example of modern elegance, and is truly a proud member of the fleet. She was sold to the Greyhound Steam Navigation Company, and was scrapped in March 1916.

Her sister, RMS Edinburgh lived a much shorter life. While undergoing a refit in 1895, she caught fire. Water was poured on her decks, where she sank with a list in her berth. The old unpopular steamer was raised, examined and determined to be too damaged. She was towed to Spain where she was broken up between 1896 and 1897.
