Also keep in mind that what you see in some videos is often recorded with the ingame recorder that gives the output video perfect freamerate while it was recorded with probably quite a lot of lag...
If you want them to eat faster you can always increase eat radius, and if you notice that they fall from the thing they are eating too often try to also increase their size (or use the "eat radius for size" option) as this will help them stick to objects from further away.

When I throw them at a building on a map, they still eat somewhat slowly and they despawn very quickly, and they don't seem to be duplicating either
