If you get some laying items on the map its your own, killed raiders as a whole so you should cremate or sell what you dont want and dont let it on the ground.... (except the ruins)
..sooo Game uses these wealth stats to measure your economic power, if you can afford weapons, defences. each 15k$ is +1 raider on 100% difficulty scale in storyteller.
Colonists also know that colony is well off, get them better acommodation to sleep in, more recreation types, better food and so on.
Wealthy colonies need more mood management.
Losing excess wealth is good for you if you dont have 11 colonists with bionics,14+shooting, armed with excellent assault rifles in "killbox"
Can speak from experience just had few days ago mass mining (5,1k gold, 10k jade in storage.. *its up to 400k$ just these .. god i realised it just 2h ago then i got raid of over 40 people
