Description
Fairbanks-Morse was a prominent company in the 40s and 50s that made a variety of engines for marine, industrial, and transportation purposes. In this case, the 38D was an inline, opposed-piston design that could have anywhere from four to twelve cylinders depending on the needed situation. They were very typically found in US submarines through into the 1960s, as well as quite a number of surface ships. They would briefly market their design for diesel locomotives, but the differences in sea-level compared to the higher surface levels of the Pacific mountain ranges, let alone the change in load tolerances meant some significant design changes had to be implemented before they departed the market in 1963, which was instead dominated by GE, ALCO, and GM products.

This in-game version has somewhat matched the opposed-piston design by including two different crankshafts, which combine on the bottom for double the power of traditional single crankshaft designs in a still somewhat compact area. It also features a variable valve for airflow in order to "supercharge" the engine or tweak airflow to find the ideal efficient cruising speed.
To set this up, the engine is self-contained enough to easily place in your creation, and then hook up the various pipes where they need to go, including the two exhaust ports, the main air port on top of the "air blower" outcrop, and the power to your respective propulsion type or generator. From there, one can hook up an outer set of controls for the power clutches, gearbox, readings from the engine, and to the air flow valve and pump.

Enjoy and don't forget to link this creation if including it in your next workshop creation!
