Norfolk Southern AC44C6M No. 4127

Description
(Requested by Keeganstevens3).

NS 4127 - not to be confused with New Zealand’s DC 4127 - was built by General Electric in 1996, originally as C40-9W No. 8900 (later uprated to 4,400 horsepower). Beginning in , Norfolk Southern began a programme to rebuild all of their C40-9, C40-9W and C44-9W locomotives into AC44C6Ms, with the work being carried out by either GE themselves or Wabtec. The rebuild of C40-9W No. 8900 was completed in February 2018, and she is still in service today as AC44C6M No. 4127.

The AC44C6M is a class of locomotive of which all examples - on Norfolk Southern, at least - were rebuilt from C40-9s, C40-9Ws or C44-9Ws. Modifications included replacing the old direct-current traction motors with alternating-current motors, because AC motors work better at lower speeds and are apparently easier to maintain. The conversion to AC44C6M spec also includes the replacement of the old standard cab from the original C40-9 (and the C40-9W’s wide cab) with a cab and front long-hood section identical to that of the ES44AC. All the while, the locomotive retains her original G.E. 7FDL-16 prime mover and rear long-hood section.
