Zombie-proof Building v2
By ThePruner
A true 100% zombie-proof building. Protects from all zombie types even at night. Now with a nicer design :-)

Location
First things first, you need to find an ideal location for your structure.

I chose this area because it is near a river, near a town, has trees and can be planted.
So we have both water, loots and possibility to plant food.

for detailed instructions on the materials and crafts used, please refer to my first zombie-proof building guide here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=212963016
Area Preparation and Foundation
Start by cutting down trees and clearing the grass on your base.
Crafting a chest is wise to keep the extra materials in a safe place.

Next, start to dig your foundation

You will need to build a forge in order to craft many, many, pickaxes :-)

Your foundation should start looking like this

I suggest you place a bed nearby in case you die, who likes to run half the map to get here?

Clean again more grass around the base for torches at night

The moat
The moat is the first line of defence, you have to dig allot in order for the zombies to die by the fall damage, especially the fat ones, they need a huge depth.

Start digging around your base, make sure there is at least two blocks gap, otherwise the zombies are able to jump over.

Keep digging all the way down

Make sure you have wood sticks for ladders, you will need them to climb in & out of the moat without dying.

One final look at the depth of the moat

Start building floors
As in my previous guide, I chose again metal trussings for their strength, durability and ability to see through.

Start by making seven columns

with some of the dirt you dug up, use it to help you build taller columns

keep building the columns taller

once you have reached a proper height, build the first floor level

next, add a ladder to one column so you can climb on to it

the view from the first floor

repeat the procedure for the next floor(s)

More floors and the Penthouse
Keep building the floors until you reach the levels you feel happy with.

Always remember to add ladders on each floor

The view from the top floor - down

Next, build your Penthouse anyway you prefer. I chose wood as the main material for a warmer feeling.

Inside the penthouse (at night)

How it works
Being so high, most zombies will not even detect you. You can just sit there and wait until the night passes with no damage taking or giving.

Even if they do detect you, they will simply fall into the moat and die.
If you get into the penthouse and close the door, the flying whasp will not even try to break in, so you are safe from that as well.

One last thing, with that distance (height) between you and the zombies, even the fat police officer zombie cannot damage you any more. So you are 100% safe (until they fix the AI and the spider zombies start climbing walls properly).

So there you have it. This time the Building is nicer than the first one and set on a better location.
If you have questions about the materials used and details on the crafts, please refer to my other guide or search the 7 days to die wiki for the recipies.

Update
Update 29 June 2014

Hello everyone.
I finally made a version of my structure on a public PvE only server with normal settings.
(no cheating/creative mode involved, no increased output damage, etc.)

If you want to visit me or my structure and have a look on how it works,
join me on server tunti turpaan
My base is located on the Center of the Map where is says Apache, you cannot miss it...

Some changes from previous guides:
  • I made the moat only one block wide, if you see the trick, you don't need more.
  • The fat zombies are the only threat since they need a huge depth to die BUT if you are on the top of the structure, due to its height, no zombie can sense you. This way you do not get agro, they do not fall in the moat and you are safe.
  • I even tested it at night and a full horde of zombies passed right under me, no problems what so ever (fat ones as well).
  • In the unlucky event that you get agro and fat ones fall inside, they will not die so you will have to manually kill them, all other zombies die from the fall instantly. no wooden spikes required.
  • Did not have any problems from Spider Zombies
  • You can also put some wooden spikes on the bottom just in case... (not required though)
  • I also changed the ladders location for safe and easier access to each floor (thanks for the comments guys)

Here is a screenshot of the latest creation in the public server:

and the new ladders location:

Enjoy!

@Happy647 Zombies don't give most XP by far. Building and crafting does.

@caitojones Right, what an interesting statement for em to make.

Huh, funny to see this in 2020. Now it is enjoyable more with more differences in weapons. And zombies provide most XP, also repairing buildings and they can withstand more. So I guess that solved those pillars and let players build more creative buildings.

@Bad Man Yeah a zombie game with a focus on building allows you to build your way out of zombie problems - how counterintuitive.

Hi I have 3 questions that I don't know if they have been answered, (don't want to read 111 comments)

1. How much depth the moat has to be to kill the fat police zombie?

2. How much blocks before building the first floor (and so how much between the floors)?

3. How much high (in block or floors if the 2 has been answered) do I must build so when I'm in the Penthouse the zombie don't sense me?

with the base to protect from spiders could you make it 3 blocks wide and cover the block closest to you so they can't climb up?. I'm planning to use this design on my first playthrough. One more thing, how high in blocks do you have to be where they won't sence you?

will this "sistem" survive DAY 7 because they permanently detect you
