If you struggle to get good Commuter (green) contracts just don't unlock Freight and IC until you have some already going. Unfortunately, editor doesn't give so many options in creating the contracts, but lets remember it's early access game :)
But, I really wondered how I could automate turning the train at Swindon before having an access to the departure tech that can turn the train. I got contracts for Cardiff-Swindon-Cardiff. Usually, as far as I've played different maps, end stations are in starts and ends, not as middle stations of the contract.
The point of my earlier comment was simply to provide accepted contracts for the starting hour instead of no contacts. That would provide green trains in a faster pace in the start because this map is already huge so getting enough points to upgrade basic stuff takes lots of time in the first place. Especially when all my contracts started in Cardiff that is very far away from everything.
