The Improved Husks mod, as the name implies, improves husks and greatly increases their influence in the world of Barotrauma, making it a much bigger threat than it was originally.

It primarily implements new monsters and new items, and in this guide we'll explore their more interesting features in detail.
Mutants
Mutant Husks are more powerful and usually possess new characteristics not present in their normal husked counterparts.
All mutants except cocoons have a chance of containing unstable husk eggs in their loot upon being killed.

Mutant Cocoons

Husked monsters can transform into their mutant versions through some type of metamorphosis.
Depending on the size of the mutant monster developing inside, the cocoon can either be terrestrial (small) or aquatic (big).
It is possible to determine what kind of mutant will hatch from the cocoon through the silhouette inside their yellow sacs.
These monsters will never spawn on their own, but must always be created, either manually by the players or through other means. If not killed quickly, they will cause an explosion and the mutant husk inside of them will emerge.

Mutant Husked Crawler
The mutant crawler is the simplest mutant husk, in that it doesn't have any special abilities other than its increased size and strength.

Mutant Husked Mudraptor

The mutant mudraptor gains the ability to shoot a vile ball of corrosive bile that will melt the submarine hull from a distance. This ability can also be used against character, dealing burn damage and infecting them with the husk infection.

Mutant Husked Human

The mutant human is a relatively simple and frail enemy which can be dismembered easily.
Being dismembered will however not cause its death, but rather simply changing its shape and size, making it harder to hit.
It becomes especially dangerous if reduced to just a skittering head by being repeatedly shot. In this state, it will look for humans and attempt to hijack their body by taking the place of their real head. This process, if started, can be prevented by shooting the mutant head off of the human, however it must be done quickly, or the result will be... Less than ideal.

Armored Mutant Husk

The armored mutant husk is a special type of human mutant that is wearing a diving suit.
In order to kill it efficiently, you must shoot its head.

Hunter Mutant Husk

The hunter mutant husk is another type of human mutant which gains the ability to store and throw the severed heads of mutant humans. The skull on its head offers protection similiar to the armored mutant husk's helmet.

Mutant Husked Threshers

Mutant threshers are powerful aquatic mutants which gain the ability to paralyse their victims in order to maximize the chances of succesfully turning them. The paralyzant injected by them is known as "black toxin", which not only slowly paralyzes its victims, but also helps the infection spread much more quickly than normal. This toxin can be cured only through the use of calyxanide.
Items
Unstable Husk Eggs
Unstable husk eggs are obtained by killing mutant husks.
Their primary function is to start the "husk mutation" process by being injected into husked creatures. Injecting them in a non husked character will infect said character with a strong dose of the husk infection.
They can also be deconstructed into two husk eggs.

Unstable Husk Stinger
A strong stinger. Can be crafted by combining a husk stinger and unstable husk eggs in the fabricator.

Husk Mutant Embryo
An item used for crafting. Can be obtained by killing and looting mutant husk cocoons.

Calyx Injector
An item used for crafting. Can be obtained by looting wrecks and can also be bought from research outposts.

Symbiotic Calyx Injector
Used to inject a dose of symbiotic husk infection in humans. Can be crafted by combining a calyx injector, a husk mutant embryo and a blood pack in the fabricator.
The first dose of it gives the following attributes to its host:
  • Health regeneration on critical condition
  • Waterbreathing
The second dose of it gives the following attributes to its host, on top of the previous ones:
  • Husk infection affinity (the husk infection will never cause your death)
  • Pressure Immunity
  • Damaged by calyxanide

Booster Calyx Injector
Used to inject a dose of booster husk infection in characters. Can be crafted by combining a calyx injector, unstable husk eggs and stabilozine in the fabricator.
This item can be used to quickly heal wounded humans, however it has a completely different effect on monsters.
It can be used on the following creatures with the following effects:
  • Hatchling crawler -> Grows into crawler
  • Crawler -> Grows into swarm crawler
  • Swarm crawler -> Lays a crawler egg
  • Hatchling mudraptor -> Grows into unarmored mudraptor
  • Unarmored mudraptor -> Grows into mudraptor
  • Mudraptor -> Lays a mudraptor egg
  • Hatchling tiger thresher -> Grows into tiger thresher
  • Tiger thresher -> Grows into bone thresher
  • Bone thresher -> Lays a thresher egg
These attributes do not come without risk, as there is a small chance that the character afflicted with this special husk infection will contract the normal husk infection.
Transformations
The mod adds a lot of transformations. It might be worth experimenting with these transformations as to find a way to use them to your advantage.

Characters that can be affected and transformed into husks by the husk infection
  • Human
  • Crawler
  • Spineling
  • Mudraptor
  • Tiger thresher
  • Bone thresher
  • Hammerhead
  • Golden hammerhead
  • Hammerhead matriarch
  • Hammerhead spawn
  • Moloch
  • Moloch pupa
  • Psilotoad
  • Orange boy
  • Peanut
  • Watcher
  • Endworm
  • Charybdis

Characters that can be affected and transformed into mutant cocoons by unstable husk eggs
  • Human husks
  • Crawler husks
  • Mudraptor husks
  • Tiger thresher husks
  • Bone thresher husks

Characters that can transform through other means
  • Mutant cocoon -> Hatches into a husk mutant after some time passes if not killed.
  • Human husk -> Becomes old human husk after a long time passes
  • Human husk wearing a diving suit -> Becomes husk diver immediately
  • Husk diver -> Becomes rusted husk diver after a long time passes while submerged in water
  • Rusted husk diver -> Becomes armored mutant husk through husk mutation (This transformation is random chance based. It is much more likely that it will instead transform into a cocoon and then into a normal mutant human.)
  • Mutant husked human -> Becomes mutant husked human torso if dismembered
  • Mutant husked human torso -> Becomes mutant husked human head if dismembered
  • Human -> Becomes human shambler if successfully attacked by mutant husked human head

update: it's just the zealot robes that cause the maxed-out psychosis. pretty sure it's not the acolyte job, @Alan . when we were playing with just the acolyte mod with enhanced husks disabled, i wore the zealot robes just fine. the moment we enabled enhanced husks after the update, i went psychotic. switched out for normal clothes and then normal cultist robes and im fine
Alan May 23 @ 10:04am
First time hearing of that, are you sure that's not something from the Acolyte job mod?
Uncle Ho May 22 @ 6:18pm
so im doing this on a run with friends. one friend and i are the acolyte job from the mod, he's using normal cult robes and im using zealot robes. we've confirmed that whenever we wear our robes, husk-infected or not, our psychosis maxes out. what's the deal with that?
Alan Apr 19 @ 9:06pm
I remember trying them and husks still atacking me, but maybe dev changed something I'm not aware of
Wallace Apr 19 @ 12:37pm
If you want the husks to ignore you im pretty sure acolyte robes work.
Alan Apr 5 @ 2:56pm
Don't know, try searching yourself or ask the mod dev why he did that
Sargent_M1 Apr 5 @ 2:52pm
Mmmm, there is no mod or something to make the husks, atleast the small ones to ignore you if you have symbiosis?
Alan Apr 5 @ 11:54am
No, this mod makes all husks hostile no mater what (correct me if my info is outdated), the only difference from vanilla husk genes is that you get a tiny health regen when you get knocked out. Just do husk church questline, they give much better benefits.

Reposting old important info for better visibility: human/crawler/mudraptor cocoons have ~33.3% of dropping an embryo and bonethresher/tigerthresher have ~42.9%

What are the effect of symbiosis here? Do husks ignore you?
