How Does It Work?

This guide shows you how to replace the default Dota map file with another one. This is done via dota_tempcontent folder, which is a folder inside the game files that is used to replace game assets when modding the game. For those concerned about VAC bans and such: As far as I'm concerned, no one has been banned just for swapping map files, although that might change in the future, who knows. Keep in mind that this "mod" doesn't add or modify any executables or change the way the game works for that matter.

Why?

Using certain maps can give players in-game advantage by boosting fps or making the map layout more clear (Desert, Immortal Gardens, for example). Furthermore, these maps cannot be purchased or obtained in-game, making them inaccessible for new players.

That being said, let's hope that valve doesn't remove this guide. To ensure that, I've removed the maps that are still purchasable through steam store, and only left the one's that no longer cannot be obtained in-game.

2. Create Necessary Folders in Dota's Game Files

By default, dota_tempcontent folder doesn't exist. To create it, browse the game's local files - head to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game

Inside the "game" folder create a new folder and rename it to

dota_tempcontent

inside dota_tempcontent, create another folder called

maps

Inside that folder, place the downloaded file (dota_desert.vpk, for example) and rename it to dota.vpk. The file should now be located in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game\dota_tempcontent\maps\dota.vpk

3. Add Launch Option

To make Dota read dota_tempcontent files, in Steam go to Dota's Properties and add the following launch option:

-language tempcontent

(for some reason you need the language part there instead of just typing "-tempcontent")

4. Done

Everything is set! Make sure you select the default terrain in-game, since that's the one we just replaced.

As the game gets future patches, you may need to update the dota.vpk file. I'll try to keep the links updated. Please note that even if the title is outdated by a minor version, the files will most likely still work, since the map isn't changed or updated in most small patches.
