It sounds like you are using another mod that changes mercenaries or units (perhaps a unit pack?). You can try using both mods at the same time, but there is a chance of your game crashing. Best create a backup of your savegames before doing that.
AFAIK there isn't really a good way to have multiple mods modifying the same aspects of the game (for instance, to have to different mercanery mods active at the same time).
I've just enabled the mod in the mod-menu. Am I missing a step?
