Resin Detector (Campaign Only)

Description
NOTE: Start game with addons from Chapter 2: The Quarantine Zone
(it may not work if you start from the beginning, this is a known issue with any campaign addon)

Make Alyx's multi-tool even more useful by turning it into a resin detector! To use it, just select the multi-tool: while in your hand, it will passively beep every two seconds if it detects nearby resin. The beep will indicate the direction and proximity of the resin: the louder it is, the closer it is!

This simple feature transforms resin-hunting from a blind, haphazard chore, to a fun, cerebral detective game. The beeping is just a small hint: you'll still have to be observant, explore every corner and rack your brain in order to find all resin. You'll be surprised at some of the cheeky hiding spots that you might never have discovered otherwise!

Before relying on this addon, I recommend you complete at least one full playthrough where you try to find as much resin as you can on your own. Then, activate Resin Detector, start a new game from the Quarantine Zone, and find out what you missed!

In my test playthrough, I was able to detect all resin in the 100% Resin Guide except for one which you can visually see but is too far away to trigger a beep. There is also one resin that doesn't spawn until you complete a certain task, so the detector won't catch it until it spawns. Finally, this addon moves one known broken resin that was previously completely hidden but still triggering a beep; it is now easily accessible.

So you should now be able to get a maximum of...
298 + 1 bugged + 1 broken, now fixed! + 4 bonus
= 304 total resin (only 270 needed for all upgrades)

Shoutouts to...

Martin the Kiteboy for his super-detailed 100% Resin Locations reference.

MarioWalrus (Recurve Bow creator) for sharing his code and some modding tips.

AspinDarkfire for his generous Alyx modding tutorial videos.

And to the redditor who shared the resin detector idea which inspired me to make this :)

Works great. And it worked even though I started with the first chapter.

Hi OZZO, I see you asked the same question on the 100% Resin Guide. On that page search "irretrievable resin" or "Resin 24" (it should be right after that one). I believe it's after you escape the zombie-filled train cars, around where you start seeing headcrabs. My addon simply moves it outside the Xen growth and drops it right onto the middle of the floor of the hallway, so it shouldn't be hard to miss.

Where is the "1 broken, now fixed!" resin?
Could you describe or post a screenshot please?

Works like a charm, although I started from the beginning, and not from chapter two. It's such a nice addition for a second playthrough clearing achievements on hard difficulty. Thanks for this, Grumble X2

Concerto: There are no dumb questions. But as far as I undrestood, the saveslot retains the information on enabled addons, so no, you have to start over. But you can start from any chapter, or even use the console to jump to a specific map, as suggested below.

this is fucking cool. I'd love to see more intricate tools added to the game that make sense within the half life universe.

@Concerto Just saw this, to use this on an existing campaign, try enabling the console and using the addon_play command as described on the Campaign+ mod page:

So I'm sorry for the possible dumb question, do you have to re-start a new game entirely and start over to get this to work? Or can you already have a game save, download this workshop addon, enable it, then load your save? I'm in ch5 and it aint working when I try to enable and load

it'd be cool, but if it did, the whole rewiring section before the elevator would be impossible, because there's resin near there.

@Qwarz_ No, it shouldn't alert Jeff. Though now that you mention it, I kind of wish it would :)

does this alert jeff when it beeps?
