Description
"I made up my mind to two things: if it was still the nineteenth century and I was among lunatics and couldn't get away, I would presently boss that asylum or know the reason why; and if, on the other hand, it was really the sixth century, all right, I didn’t want any softer thing: I would boss the whole country inside of three months; for I judged I would have the start of the best-educated man in the kingdom by a matter of thirteen hundred years and upward." - Hank Morgan, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain

This is a mod adapted from Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court[www.gutenberg.org], based on the perspective of you, the ruler. Hank Morgan shows up at your court. What you do from there may change the future of your realm, and possibly the world.

Mod main points:
  • Hank Morgan - Hank Morgan is an arrogant, cynical, ambitous, but just character who shows up at your court one day, dressed in strange clothes. He has his own goals and motivations, and they mainly involve bringing his version of civilization to your people. You can go along with his wishes, or oppose him as you see fit. However, be warned that he becomes more influential as time goes on, and his goals may not include you in a position of power!
  • Innovations - Many new innovations have been added ranging from societal changes to various forms of industrialization. They can provide many benefits, though not everyone is quick to embrace new ways, especially those who have much to lose from new ideas and inventions!
  • Culture and Innovation spread - The Yankee culture is very advanced compared to most other cultures, however Hank is the only member when he initially arrives. This can change in events or during Hank's efforts to spread civilization. Innovations can only exist if Hank creates a prototype or writes down the idea. If he dies before then, the innovation is lost forever! They can only spread to the host culture while Hank is still ramping up, but once Hank develops the printing press, all bets are off!
  • Faith - Hank is Protestant, specifically Presbyterian. How people will treat him depends on the local faith, but he is sure to raise some eyebrows when he expresses his beliefs!
  • Events - Many new events that are based on what occurs in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court are now available, and in most cases you can choose to participate or not:
    • Witnessing practical miracles
    • Hank's adventures in wandering the countryside
    • The trials and tribulations of bringing civilization to a people resistant to change
    • Going incognito through your realm
    • Philosophical arguments ending in fistfights
    • Unexpected tournament outcomes
    • ... and more!
  • Long Term Outcomes - There are several possible outcomes of Hank's stay at your court, some of which introduce new government types, and the ability to modernize many buildings! There are also several new Men-at-Arms types potentially available! However, be warned that technological change without societal change is headed for disaster!

Compatibility
This mod strives to be as compatible as possible but some mechanics required overwriting certain vanilla files and entries. NOT Achievements compatible, unfortunately. Make sure this is after the required Lost Souls framework mod in the load order. I would recommend starting a new save when installing this mod.
List of overwritten vanilla files/entries:
  • Level 4 Holding upgrades and final tier upgrade of most buildings
  • tribal_authority can_keep triggers and realm_law_use_crown_authority scripted triggers
  • can_raid_across_water and can_traverse_river scripted rules

Future Features:
Enhancements to government forms
Faith based events
3d models for Hank's 1880s clothes - if anyone is good at creating clothes or holding models for CK3, feel free to contact me, and I will include them

Disclaimer
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was published in 1889, so the views of the author are reflective of that era. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is a satire of feudalism and monarchy that also celebrates homespun ingenuity and democratic values while questioning the ideals of capitalism and outcomes of the Industrial Revolution.

Personal Note:
This is my second published CK3 mod. Let me know in the discussion section about improvements, bugs etc. and I will try to address your concerns. This mod was created mostly for my own enjoyment of CK3 and I would like to share it with you. Improving it would help us both. I do this in my spare time,

I'm having a similar issue as @Dat Happy Dude with this mod. I actually prefer the Isekai characters mod and use that more often, but the Hank Morgan character was my first real taste of your anachronistic awesomeness in these mods of yours. Bit of a nasty bug that needs squishing quick if I'm seriously going to invite Hank Morgan to my courts again.

Even when only this mod and the framework are enabled it slows the game to a crawl to the point that its unplayable

foo boy. not sure what it is, but this mod absolutely kills my mod load. Just a huge slow down.

You can have your cake and eat it too. Keep the canonical story, but allow for other outcomes and endings based on Traits and personality. You don't have to railroad it, nor do you have to actually give up or reimagine the real story.

As for Mods that add actual magic, have someone else do that. You should focus on improving the story.

@roxasvonbielefield: Thank you for your comment! I am wary of deviating too much from the general story, as this was intended as an adaptation of Connecticut Yankee instead of a re-imagining. You do have a point, however, of characters in the game not reflecting their story counterparts in personality and abilities. I will see if I can add additional story paths for some of the main plot points earlier in the story. I have already added multiple endings other than the depressing canon one at the end of Connecticut Yankee, including rebelling against the church, peaceful abdication, and constitutional monarchy. Magic might be an interaction with characters from other Lost Souls mods.

Hello good sire! im quite pleased (and admitedly, surprised) to see this mod make a comeback, so, now that you are back, i have a few suggestions for you, for one, sometimes the mod felt like your choices and traits didn't matter at all, for once, the matter of the imprisonment, like, my queen has more than enough martial and prowess to kill with one punch like she was saitama, and some rando guy manages to capture her?, she's also a genius, she would never do like the novel Arthur and go to the country side without a whole squadron of knights following her from behind. There's also the matter of Magic, there a quite a few mods that include it, so it would be a good detail if you add an option to change the text so Magic is aknowledged as a real thing, and a very, very surprised Hank actually having to Compete toe to toe with Merlin like: Hank is developing flat glass, Merlin finds out and manages to create an spell to do it even easier that Hank's Metod and so.

Updated for Royal Court. I am going to be taking a break for a week to recharge after posting my new mod about characters from modern times being thrust into the medieval era, ( steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2835768265 ) . I will respond to comments and suggestions after I return.

Hope this mod hasn't been abandoned or left to die. Looking forward to seeing an update so that I can have Hank Morgan or whoever else tech up my empires again.

A few comments in my testing:

1. For some reason, in the story where Hank detonates a blockage in a holy site's well , the characters shout "Tengri's Wounds" (I'm a Mongol).

2. I was only able to unlock the Printing Press before Hank cucked me . How do I get the rest of the workshop stories? Like, where are my chemical plants and all that good jazz?

3. When Hank began the Republican Civil War, he spawned on top of my capital and instantly sieged it down. I wasn't even able to get my allies called. Why? Was it designed so that you can never win ?
