How to communicate in Dota 2 without using mic
By anomaluna
This guide is for people who don't like using mic to communicate or often encounter players who don't speak their language. Also, it can be useful for new players.

Introduction
Dota 2 is known to be quite frustrating because of toxic players. Often, you'll see people suggesting new players to mute their team if they're flaming.

Communicating with such teammates becomes difficult when one is only typing/speaking into mic. Also, typing can be cumbersome and not everyone likes using mic. Thankfully, there are many tools in the game that allow you to communicate practically any message needed to win a game.
Chat Wheels
It is highly recommended you customize your chat wheels and use both of them, because you need as many messages as possible.

Primary Chat Wheel

Group up and I'm retreating: Whether you plan to fight or disperse.
Wait and Careful: When you're not ready to fight with your team.
Check runes and Pulling creeps: To alert your carry to be careful in lane when you're playing support. Alternatively, you can use "Pull creeps please" when you're playing carry.
Roshan: An important objective that needs coordination from the team.
Pause please: When you need to disconnect or your teammate disconnects but your pause is on cooldown.

Secondary Chat Wheel

Don't underestimate the importance of this. You need as many PMA messages as possible to keep your team morale up.

Well played, Nice and Thanks: To commend your team.
Affirmative and Negative: To answer questions.
Sorry, Don't give up and Relax you're doing fine: To deal with teammates losing hope or flaming.
Ping Wheel

The default settings for ping wheel are sufficient.

Standard ping (Alt + left click): Used to ping locations, heroes, runes, objectives like towers etc. Generally used to send a "go here" message.
Alternate ping (Ctrl + Alt + left click): Used to ping locations. Generally used to send a "danger" or "retreat" message.
Ping wheel (Alt + hold left click for 1 second): I recommended testing this out in demo mode yourself and see the different messages you can send. Coming here, attack here, retreat from here, we need ward here, enemy has ward here are the different messages you can send at specific locations.
Phrases

I intentionally don't bind any hotkeys to these phrases because you need as many hotkeys as possible on the left side of your keyboard vacant for abilities, items etc. Besides, all of these phrases can be communicated via chat wheels or Alt + clicking, which is explained below.
Miscellaneous
There are tons of messages that can be sent by either Alt + left clicking or Ctrl + Alt + left clicking on various different things in the game. I recommend exploring this in demo mode yourself.

Shop:
Alt + left click: Indicates that you will buy the item. For an item in quickbuy, indicates whether you have enough gold to buy that item.
Ctrl + Alt + left click: Indicates that someone on your team should buy that item. For an item in quickbuy, indicates whether you have enough gold to buy that item and buyback.

Inventory:
Alt + left click: Indicates the status (ready/cooldown) of an item in your or your ally's inventory. Can also alert that an enemy has an item. Also indicates status of Neutral item slot or TP slot. If Neutral item is in backpack, requests the player to give you that item.
Ctrl + Alt + left click: If a neutral item is in an ally's backpack, requests the player to equip that item.

Abilities, Talents and Aghanim upgrades:
Alt + left click: Indicates status of ability/talent and indicates whether it is ready, on cooldown or if you have picked a particular talent. Also indicates whether you have purchased Aghanim's Scepter or Shard for particular ability upgrades.

HUD:
Alt + left click: On HP/MP bars, indicates Health points and Mana points of a particular hero in percentage. On gold button, indicates buyback status for your hero. On status icon, indicates the buff/debuff you are currently affected with.
Ctrl + Alt + left click: On HP/MP bars, indicates Health points and Mana points of a particular hero in absolute values.

Hero icon:
Alt + left click: Indicates the hero is missing. If the hero is dead, indicates how long before they respawn.
Ctrl + Alt + left click: Indicates the hero has returned to lane.

Clock:
Alt + left click: Indicates the current time on the clock. If bounty or power runes are about to spawn/recently spawned, indicates the time difference for that as well.
Ctrl + Alt + left click: Indicates whether it is Day time or Night time. Useful with heroes like Keeper of the Light and Night Stalker.

Scan & Glyph:
Alt + left click: Indicates whether Scan/Glyph is ready or on cooldown.
Ctrl + Alt + left click: Requests allies not to use Scan/Glyph.

Very nice guide, it's definitely a great way to approach communication by refraining to only provide the useful, concrete one.
