A. Make sure the game is closed when performing the steps, then restart.

Q. I still can't see the grids.
A. Create a random, temporary grid and repeat the process.

Q. I STILL can't see the grids.
A. Make sure the file name is exactly this:
hero_grid_config.json

Q. I STILL CAN'T SEE THE GRIDS.
A. Reinstall Windows.
General FAQ
Q. Can I use your grids for free?
A. Yes.

Q. Can I share your grids with my friends?
A. For non-commercial use, sharing link to this Steam guide is okay. Resharing, selling, or advertising these grids on personal accounts/websites is not allowed.

Q. Will I lose my grids if I download and copy your file?
A. Yes. Backup your file before replacing it.

Q. Where is Ringmaster?
A. Has been added.

Q. Your grids are bad. I will not use them.
A. Okay.
Noob
If you're a new player, this is the best grid to use. Heroes are divided by difficulty: easy, medium and hard (best to pick easy heroes) and supports and cores.

Generally, a team has 3 cores (1 in each lane) and 2 supports (1 in each side lane).

FAQ

Q. Why is 'x-hero' under 'Hard Support'? It can be played as 'Soft Support' too.
A. Heroes are arranged by difficulty i.e. Easy, Medium and Hard. Roles are broadly separated as Cores and Supports, not specifically Hard Support or Soft Support.

Q. Why is 'x-hero' in 'Support' and not in 'Core'?
A. This grid is based on the Divine/Immortal rank grid for Dota Plus and is determined by how the highest rank players in the game play heroes.

Q. How is difficulty of hero determined?
A. Mechanical complexity of hero, whether the hero requires micro/controlling multiple units, whether the hero has vector-targetted abilities, whether the hero has skillshots, whether the hero necessarily requires comboing spells together, and whether the hero has more than 4 standard spells.

Q. Ackshually 'x-hero' is easy not hard.
A. Okay.
Legacy
This is a reference to how heroes were arranged and selected in the original DotA mod and the old Dota 2 client (pre-Reborn).

FAQ

Q. 'x-hero' was released after the Reborn update. Why did you place it in 'x-category'?
A. Factions are tied to some heroes in game files, while some are assumed.
Element
This grid is made particularly for in-house lobbies to have fun matches based on certain 'themes' or 'elements' that are common between different heroes.

FAQ

Q. Why isn't 'x-hero' in 'x-category'?
A. Several heroes are compatible with multiple categories. Grid is designed to have one hero restricted to one category.

Q. But why not have multiple heroes in multiple categories?
A. Because it's a more fun challenge to design it this way and makes efficient use of space.
Periodic
A 'periodic table' of Dota 2 heroes. All heroes are arranged in the order in which they were released into Dota 2.

FAQ

Q. How are the heroes arranged?
A. By release date.

Q. But 'x-hero' released before 'y-hero' in the original DotA.
A. Heroes are arranged by release date in Dota 2.

Q. But elements are arranged by atomic number in periodic tables.
A. Okay.
Surprise
Surprised Pikachu face.

FAQ

Q. Did you make this automatically with some tool or manually?
A. Manually.

Q. This grid did not surprise me.
A. Okay.
Function
These filters sort heroes based on their functionality i.e. durable, disabler, nuker, etc. and those that offer multiple functionality i.e. disabler + initiator, nuker + escape, etc.

FAQ

Q. Why make this grid when filters are there at the bottom?
A. These filters were added long ago, before the Reborn update, then removed for a while. Even though they were brought back, they still use old attributes that are outdated to the latest patch.

Q. Why is 'x-hero' not in 'x-category'?
A. Old filters had levels [1/2/3] for each attribute for each hero. Many heroes have certain attributes at level 1, but to make it simple and easy, only levels 2 and 3 are considered.

Q. Some heroes have more than 3 attributes.
A. They are present in multiple categories and can be found by typing their name.

Q. Why not have categories with more than 3 attributes?
A. To keep it simple and easy to use.
Advanced
This is an advanced grid with heroes arranged by specific roles. Some heroes are played in a single role (hard support, soft support, off lane, mid lane, safe lane) while others may be played in multiple roles (versatile support, versatile utility, versatile core, versatile carry).

FAQ

Q. What do these 'Versatile' categories mean?
A. 'Versatile Support' means heroes that can be played as both 'Hard Support' and 'Soft Support'.
'Versatile Carry' means heroes that can be played as both 'Mid Lane' and 'Safe Lane'.
'Versatile Core' means heroes that can be played as both 'Off Lane' and another Core role.
'Versatile Utility' means heroes that can be played as one of both Support and Core role.

Q. Why is 'x-hero' not in 'x-category'?
A. This grid is based on the Divine/Immortal rank grid for Dota Plus and is determined by how the highest rank players in the game play heroes.

Q. Ackshually, I still play 'x-hero' as support and win in my bracket.
A. There's a reason the 'Soft Support' category in the Dota Plus grid for Herald rank is the biggest and gets smaller as you go up in rank.

I edit the files in notepad or a text editor for categories to have the same size and be equidistant from each other. You can see using the Google Drive link to download the file.
