at first, I thought this scene was hilarious, if a little disappointing. but then I realized; Ben must of came to a sort of mid-tirade clarity that if he fought Grandfather, it wouldn't change a single thing between them; Pappy was just never gonna accept Ben over Monty, no matter what he did to him.
not to mention if Monty's plan went off without a hitch, Pappy would be sealed back into his depowered civilian form, and wouldn't remember a single thing about the thrashing Ben would, could, and frankly had every right to give him, so what would be the point?
TL;DR = Ben didn't flake out because he was lazy or afraid, he left the fight up to Monty because he had absolutely nothing to prove to the ancient bastard.
