Norfolk Southern No. 4179 was rebuilt from C40-9W No. 8965, an engine that was built by General Electric in 1996. She was 23 years old when she was rebuilt, with the work being carried out in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Not much is know about AC44C6M No. 4179, apart from the fact that she now has a very mundane life hauling freight, especially since she doesn’t carry a special livery like classmates 4001, 4002 and - by extension - AC44C6CF No. 8520.
