Designed for heavy express passenger trains, 73 were built between 1906 and 1923. Following various experiements with 3 French engines, the design incorporated some of the best technology from the French designs. The four cyclinder, 4-6-0 design was so sucessful it became the basis for all subsequent GWR heavy passenger engines and the pacific (4-6-2) design, popular with other railways, was never embraced by the GWR, with only one prototype ever being built. The last Star was withdrawn in 1957 and 4003 'Lode Star' has been preserved, after covering more than 2 million miles.
22 of the 73 Stars were still in service when the railways were nationalised in 1948. The last Star was withdrawn in 1957 and 4003 'Lode Star' has been preserved, after covering more than 2 million miles.

Designed to succeed the Star Class for increasingly heavy express passenger trains. The Castles were an upgrade to the highly successful Star design, with a larger boiler on an extended frame, allowing for a larger cab with side windows. When launched they were publicised as being Britain's most powerful passenger engine - even more so than the LNER A1 Flying Scotsman - and subsequent exchange trials proved the point (and that it had better fuel efficiency). As the big four British railway companies competed for speed in the 1930s, Castles hauled the GWR's 'Cheltenham Flyer', which was for a time the fastest train service in the world, scheduled with an average speed over 70mph. Between 1923 and 1950 171 were built. 8 were preserved including 4073 Caerphilly Castle, withdrawn in 1960.
After nationalisation in 1948 30 Castles were built under British Railways up to 1951. From 1956 some were fitted with double chimneys and larger superheaters, leading to their fastest documented speed of 102mph in 1958. The last to be retired was 7029 Clun Castle, at the end of 1965, shortly after hauling the last steam service to depart from Paddington. After being preserved it operated steam rail tours into the 80s. And it is hoped it will be able to return to mainline operation in late 2018.

Supports custom colours, no user logo, 18 on-board camera views. Includes versions as placeable scenery Assets.

Aha! Extended Particle effects! I was searching on "smoke" and "steam" and not finding anything.

Cool, thanks

For the Extended Particle Effects mod it says:
"For all locomotives emissions are roughly based on their powe rating. The more power, the more emissions. ...
- main stack fume is now more animated and whiter.
- cylinder leakage has been greatly reduced."
This matches the image from Matt and I think was the cause when it's been reported previously.

I have the same problem, the only particle mod installed is:

@JK Thanks for looking at it so quickly. I'll have a look through my mod list but I don't *think* I have a specific mod just to change smoke effects, so it's probably an unintended consequence of something else.

Just weird that it only affects the Castles and Prairies specifically, *shrug*
JK  [author] Dec 23, 2022 @ 8:29am
@Matt - I suspect it's being affected by another mod that changes smoke effects somehow. The positions of those 3 looks right, but their size is greatly reduced and the initial colour has been changed too.

I don't know if it's just an interaction with another mod or some weird bug, but with these and the Prairies I'm getting three plumes of chimney smoke...

It's not a major issue in the grand scheme of things but if it is a problem with the mod itself, it's worth letting you know.

@Wangsamuel - Thanks. I may do some of those other classes eventually. But probably more than a year away.

Fun fact not sure if mentioned but as a Brummie... 7029 Clun Castle was the first locomotive purchased by what would become Birmingham Railway Museum, now Tyseley Locomotive Works, Vintage Trains (excursions arm) and Tyseley Collection, where it still resides and it is currently mainline certified until 2025. It may be in current service on the vintage route but I'm not 100% sure after a bit of interweb searching.

Thinking of building some of the UK vintage rail routes and museums (Severn Valley, York, BRM etc) into my TF2 Midlands inspired map layouts so this will likely be used as a vintage service between Birmingham Snow Hill and Stratford-Upon-Avon for this reasonl.

So - Thanks for making it playable by adding the mod :)

Just wish somebody had built a Moor Street workshop station as it would look so good there! Modders....
