Local Auxiliary Legionaries for Rome [ Ver. 0.7.2 - April 2024 ]

Description
Local Auxiliary Legionaries is a mod that aims to add an auxiliary force consisting of the local people of the region, that is trained in the Roman arts of war.

While this might seem like a totally fictional mod, that is not entirely the case. Though in the vanilla game, auxiliary troops are almost exclusively light units, studies show that the auxulia was actually mostly heavy, legionary-ish units. This mod is not in any way historicaly accurate, but the consept of legionary-ish units are accurate. Here is a quote from an article written by Dr. Phil Hendry "Most auxiliary cohorts contained heavy infantry similar to legionaries – wearing mail and helmets, carrying spears and large shields"

With Scutums, gladiuses, and tactical training in Roman formations, fighting style and disipline, they are equal to the Roman legionary in battle, but with resistance to the local climate, making them an excellent force in the local regions.

So far i have added 12 units, each belonging to their own regions on the map, but i will progressively add a unit for each local culture. They will only be recruitable in their respective regions as auxiliaries. This will add an unique touch to your armies that origin from different parts of the world.

Recruited from Auxiliary Barracks, in their respective regions.
They are also (For now) recruitable as General Units, however, in update Beta 0.6 i will replace this feature with 4 unique general units. one for each climate/direction on the map.

**[Last Update]**
Ver. Beta 0.7.1 [Update April. 17th 2024]
*[FIX] Balanced Unit stats. The stats are meant to reflect that of the regulare legionaries, but some "ghost - defence skill" was present (making them quite OP). This has been resolved and stats are now like legionaries.
*[NEW] Added Culture relevant Unit cards to make it easier to distinct between the units.

Ver. Beta 0.7.2 (Hotfix) [Update April. 17th 2024]
*[FIX] Rebalanced unit stats again since some units had less melee defence skill than others (due to armor type).
*[Change] Lighter armored Legionaries (Carthagenian and Egyptian] have been changed to medium infantry to increase their mobility

(Earlier updates notes can be found in the change notes)

[ROADMAP] (This will change, as i work on the project)
Beta 0.8: Add Bactrian and Arabian Legionaries, also make Marian Reforms required to recruit the units.
Beta 0.9: Add Persian and Thracian Legionaries
Release 1.0: Add the rest [Big boii update] All Auxiliary regions has their own Legionary Unit.

1: I know of the mod you are mentioning. They will only add them as garrison if you do not upgrade your city to a Roman type city. So if you capture a greek city and keep it greek, his legionaries will show up, but not if you convert it to a Roman type city.

Since there is no way (that i know of atleast) to add region spesific garrisons, i cannot do it unfortunately :/

2: Yes, i have neglected to update the DB-Table that handles AI-recruitment priority. I have fixed this for the upcoming update. Some of them are already in the DB, but since the units are prioritized on the same level as regular Legionaries and they need spesific regions to recruit them, they are exceedingly rare to encounter in the hands of the AI.

The general unit issue will be solved by adding command units and removing the ability to use the others as command unit.

Hello everyone, thanks for your comments!
As you can guess from my update frequency and response time, i have been inactive for a good while, but im making a sporadic return to the Rome 2 Modding scene :D

craggiggleman: It should be relatively easy, i will put it in the roadmap basket :)

Tribunul Vadim: Possibly, my first focus will be to add the 4 commander units, but if i continue after that, i will definetly get to those

rafael25050: Yes this is savegame compatable :)

AngryViking98: Yes this mod relies on vanilla assets (except some textures), so any mods that alter the vanilla assets will affect this mod.

Sausage: This mod uses the vanilla Grand Campagin UI style, so if you are running with 3D Unit Cards / are playing Empire Divided they will stand out yes..

Hi! I don't know if you're still working on this mod, but if you are, I have two suggestions/observations.

1. Would it be possible to have these guys show up in appropriate garrisons? Another "Local Legionnaire" type mod I've seen does that, but I like the cultural look of your units better.

2. I haven't seen the A.I. use them that much. They'll use them as general units (despite not having any land in the appropriate regions), but I don't think I've seen them as rank-and-file units. Then again, the last two games I've played, I rushed to take out Rome cause I'm scared of them, so maybe I just didn't let them expand enough.

Anyway, those are my two points. Thanks for reading, and love the mod!

I really like this idea. Have to leave it out for the mismatch with other unit cards, as it has no 3D units cards for the legions of foreign origin. Really nice work though! Thanks!

Im having issues with some textures not loading like the nordic shield, and the pants and boots for the egyptians im running HD II unit retexture so i dont know if it is an issue with that?

Vlad the Inhaler Mar 29, 2021 @ 4:11pm
By any chance will you be making any Daco-Thracian or Illyrian Legionaries?
craggiggleman Mar 15, 2021 @ 7:41pm
Any way you could make this compatible with DeI?

moab101; Thanks for the feedback! I have fixed both the issue and the misunderstanding! First, i made an error in the description, i actually added iberians, not illyrians.. My bad :P

Also, i found the issue with the North-Africans, and this has been corrected in the new hotfix update (0.6.1)
