8K Ultra HD ESA ENVISAT Earth Texture

Description
We must not forget where we come from - lest we forget who we are

Very fancy 8K Ultra-HD Earth texture for Stellaris, derived from real satellite footage from the European Space Agency's ENVISAT satellite.

Full resolution texture preview on Imgur:[imgur.com]
(This is only a preview for those who wish to see how the texture looks. You do not need to save this in any way. This is here because the workshop page cannot display images this large.)

The texture has been modified only slightly, mostly to simulate the effects of the Earth's atmosphere and to compensate for the game's lightning and effects:
  • Added glaciers (were removed from original)
  • Added blue layer to oceans to more closely match Earth's true appearence from space
  • Slightly shifted hue, saturation and lightness, to match real Earth atmosphere

The original footage by ESA was 18000 x 9000! Unfortunately, the game engine does not want to load in texture sizes for planets above 8192 x 4096, at least not as far as I know. If anyone knows of a way to make even larger planet texture resolutions work, please let me know and I shall see if I can do this.

Recommended Mods:
Real Sol: Adds wonderful textures to the other planets, moons, etc.
Real Sol Expansion: Adds various terraformed textures to planets like Mars, Luna, etc.
Immersive Galaxy: Nightfall: Adds lifelike city lights to Earth.

Compatability:
Should be compatible with pretty much everything that doesn't modify Earth textures. Compatible with Real Space, Real Sol, etc. but make sure you put this below other graphics mods in the load order or else it might not show up.

To Do:
  • Add upscaled cloud textures (could be done via AI upscaling, possibly)
  • Try to make higher res version (if the game allows it)
  • Add AI upscaled spec maps
  • Add eco-arcology textures

Special thanks to the Stellaris Modding Den for help with debugging!

Hi @Doctor_Verum! Just wanted to give you an update and thank you for giving me permission to use the artwork. I actually checked into it and I see where the original earth artwork matches the other continental planet images, as such I decided to not officially incorporate the artwork into my mod though I may continue using it on my own. If your interested you can check out my mods code on github at: https://github.com/Joseph-Anthony-King/forward_earth

This is a great mod and I love the artwork! I will definitely keep using this. :steamhappy:

Thanks @Doctor_Verum! My gaming rig is currently in the shop but I'll let you know when the edits are complete along with appropriate credit to you for the artwork... thanks!

@joseph_anthony_king If you simply design the Earth in your mod to use the continental_05_diffuse.dds texture for the model, it should use this texture since this texture overwrites that file.

However, if you'd wish to simply make this texture the default texture for Earth in your mod, feel free to do so, just credit me for the texture / link this page. I appreciate the politeness of your request, let me know how your own project works out and if I can be of further assistance.

Hey Doctor Verum! This looks awesome! I have two earth based mods where I'd like to add your earth artwork to my mod. The mods overwrite the sol system so I can't simply place a dependency on your mod in order to add the artwork. I give credit to any authors when I incorporate their work. Can I use your artwork in my mod? I won't do anything until I hear from you... this is awesome work and you should be proud! :steamhappy:

@Crazy-KSK Ah, worth a try I guess. Might look into that, thanks.

try out https://github.com/lltcggie/waifu2x-caffe/releases it can handle upscaling to 8k might have to play with settings a bit for best results

@Kayess Sorry for late response. I did try to do this but very few AI upscaling software systems allow that sheer size of textures. Could theoretically be solved by doing it in pieces, which I may try in the future.

@GimlisAxe I don't know, but I don't think there'd be a problem. There would be only one issue; if you convert Earth into Eco-Arcology, it will render with the default Earth texture from Planetary Diversity Eco-Arcology. This could be fixed by modifying those textures, which I will consider doing if i get some time. It wouldn't break anything else and would still look like this when set to pc_continental, as long as this mod is below in the load order.

So I'm guessing this mod isn't compatible with Planetary Diversity's Eco-Arcologies?

this would be great if you upscaled the specular map too
