For Viking Conquest I have found that groups are only compatible as A+D and B+C if you're maximizing companions. (I like to put them on the front line full of missile weapons to obliterate enemy charges.) The ADs are the scoundrels, and the BCs are the happy friendly types for purposes of actions and consequences.
Nevertheless, doing emissary missions is affected by other calculations, but doing only that shouldn't make any hero to leave your company. There are combinations, bigger ones, that allow you to use more heroes, but you'll have conflicts and thus the moral-game becomes a must, but with these groups you won't have any conflict at all (they all are either neutral or love someone in those groups)
