Cities of Wonders (WtWSMS)

Description
Kurthakon the creator of this mod has passed away in real life.
To honor his memory please continue his legacy and please credit him, from his sister.

This is simply the When the World Stopped Making Sense (0.9.13) compatibility version of my mod Cities of Wonders, that adds a new type of Great Work or Wonder called a “City of Wonders” (COW), which is meant to represent the great cities of the world that contains multiple structures that could be classified as Wonders. The wonder added by this mod simply allows you to build multiple wonders and most of their associated upgrades inside this new City-Wonder.

Only for use with the When the World Stopped Making Sense mod.

Cities of Wonders
The primary issue I had with the free Great Works update was that you could only have one wonder per province/county, while some counties arguably should have multiple. For example, why do Roma only have the Lateran/Apostolic Palace, and not the Coliseum too? Why could the player not rebuild the Mouseion or the Great Library of Alexandria while also having the Lighthouse of Alexandria in the province? Why cannot you have both the Theodosian Walls and the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople?

This mod remedies this by allowing you to build all of the wonders in the City of Wonders as long as you meet the very similar criteria to vanilla for them. Currently there’s 14 different types of Cities of Wonders. 12 of them are historical, which can only be built at specific places. The other two types are the ones that can be built from scratch by the player, as long as you meet the requirements for them respectively. All of the Cities of Wonders are divided into 10 stages that should at the very least take over a century to complete all stages from scratch. The buildable ones provide a huge amount of 40 upgrade slots total at the last stage, while the historical ones “only” have 36 slots. This was intended to give a small reward to any player who would build up a COW from the ground up, instead of just taking an existing COW and use that instead.

Each wonder that you build in the city-wonder you could consider a separate city district, after the wonder is built it unlocks any of the associated upgrades so that those can be built too in the “district”. With a max of 36/40 upgrades, that is quite a decent number of upgrades you could build. Also, at the moment the bonuses provided by the wonders matches the Stage 4 of each vanilla wonder, which is kind of overpowered, and I will probably have to rebalance this later.

Feature List
Check the feature list of the original mod, HERE.

I'll more fully integrate Cities of Wonders with WtWSMS when or if it matures out of beta.

Mod Compatibility
Only for use with When the World Stopped Making Sense enabled. Updated for 0.9.13.
Expect infrequent updates while WtWSMS is in beta.

To get access to any of the new historical wonders you'll have to start a new game, but you should still be able to build a City of Wonder in your on-going saves.

CK2 Vanilla version HERE. Use this one if you are just playing regular CK2 without WtWSMS.

HIP - SWMH compatible version (Frosty2) HERE.

HIP - Vanilla map compatible version (Frosty2) HERE.

AGOT 2.2 compatible version currently in Alpha HERE.

Ironman & Achievements
COW unfortunately alters the checksum out of necessity, so this mod is NOT achievement friendly.

I was already using cities of wonders myself in my personal game, and have been deeply enjoying it, but I've never heard of this "when the world stopped making sense" mod. Looking it up though, it seems pretty cool and I want to try it out, so guess I'll download this version of COW instead of the vanilla version. Thanks for introducing me to an awesome new mod, hopefully I can get it running with my modlist without significant crashing :)

I don't currently have any plans to add any more, no. Also, Sparta doesn't really meet the criteria for a City of Wonders since it never was any sort of large or significant city by itself.

Are you planning on adding any more semi-historical ruined cities, like Sparta?

Some of the modifiers are similar in nature, but I don't think the special buildings were meant to represent Great Works anyways like mine does. In terms of balance, a City of Wonders alone is very powerful so you would have to consider that before using this mod.

Redundant, as in, it stacks the modifiers or it's fine and doesn't create an imbalance?
kurthakon  [author] May 3, 2020 @ 12:59pm
Well, it was not really about historical accuracy I was thinking about when I wrote that. It was more about some of the special buildings you can get in a few specific holdings which have become completely redundant with my mod. For example, special buildings like the Pantheon, Hagia Sophia, Colosseum et cetera.

The only historical inconsistency of significance I can think of is the City of Wonders in Constantinople using the Hagia Sophia graphics before it was built during Justinian’s reign. I’ve decided to let Constantinople keep it though, since the Hagia Sophia model at the earlier start dates is unfinished and without its famous dome until you upgrade the City of Wonders.

What exactly do you mean by fully integrate? Are there some historical inconsistencies i should be aware of?
