Description
Welcome to Manic's Persian Units - By (unexpected) popular demand, I present the long-awaited units mod for the Iranian culture group. Persian, and the other cultures in the Iranian culture group, now has its own early-game units and a re-designed roster that utilises the high quality Middle Eastern units added in the Holy Fury expansion.

For the early-game units, I thought it would be interesting to base them more on the armies of their Sasanian predecessors than on their Abbasid/Muslim overlords. After all, the Persian heartlands remain majority Zoroastrian in the earlier start dates. For the mid/late-game units, considering Persia was ruled by Turkic and Mongol nomads for a significant part of the Middle Ages, I set out to make them primarily Middle Eastern in appearance, but with a somewhat 'Altaic' feel to them.

Unlike with a number of my other mods, this practically does away with the generic Persian DLC unit models since I was getting the impression, from people requesting I make a mod for the Iranian cultures, that they wouldn't exactly be missed. Since they hardly ever appear on the map, the old models for archers, light cavalry and horse archers have been left untouched.

As a word of warning to all those seeking top notch historical accuracy, this is the first time I've really tried to tackle a non-European culture's units. I know next to nothing about the history of Iran, its civilisation or the appearance of their troops throughout the Middle Ages so I apologise in advance if these look awful. Let's just say that Professor Google was a big help in my research for the unit design inspirations in this mod and he's not exactly known for his trustworthiness.

Also, a side note, there's an issue where the helmets don't 100% align with the models of the heavy infantry/cavalry. Since the only way to fix it is to make the helmets unrealistically big (which causes another problem whereby they aren't aligned properly with the head) there is unfortunately nothing I can do to fix it.

This custom unit pack should be fully compatible with any and all mods for Crusader Kings II, so long as they don't also edit units tied to the 'persiangfx' culture (specifically the 'persian_units.gfx' file).

Want even more modded units? Or perhaps you're just the nosy type like me? Then I humbly suggest that you check out my other unit mods, located in the Manic's Units workshop collection.

For those experiencing issues with the Workshop, or otherwise wish to bypass it for whatever reason, you can download a file containing all of the Manic's Units mods and add-ons here[www.dropbox.com]. Simply place both the folder(s) and the .mod file(s) in your CK2 mod folder (Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\mod by default).

All of these mods are both Ironman & savegame compatible.

A new model has been added for the late-game heavy infantry (screenshot added above). Just be aware that, to be able to see it in-game, you will now need the Warriors of the Faith Unit Pack.

Hey, do you think you could fix the animations and hands on some of these unit models?

Oh, and I don't mean to bother you with more requests, but the Hungarians don't seem to have ANY custom models, even with DLC.

They seemed to use western armor for most of Hungary's history, and in early periods it would have been more similar to Cuman and other nomadic armor. German models look perfect for 950 onwards, and the Cuman models would be good for early.

Again, sorry to bother with more requests, but if this was added to Hungary, then I think that every culture in game will have a unique model!

Those look great! (And sorry for not specifying about the gambeson. It would have only been used in the late middle ages). Can't wait to see them in-game!

@thecains - Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion. Yeah, both the images I linked were for the heavy infantry models.

As for the light infantry I've currently given the mid-game Celts a re-purposed early Germanic light cavalry model as the base since, from the images you sent me and the ones I could find, lighter infantry at this point still didn't seem to be equipped with anything as thick as a gambeson.

For late-game light infantry, I assigned the vanilla Celtic pikeman model since it utilised thicker armour than the generic Celtic light infantry model (which I've assigned to mid-game pikemen). Actually, I'll upload links to the 'complete set' of mid and late-game models for the Celts to show you what I mean. The light infantry is the one on the bottom left.

The images you showed me (Which I assume are heavy) are perfect though. That's as close as you can get using CK2 models

It looks great. I have an interest in medieval armor, but Celtic armor is hard to find anything on, mainly because they didn't have any. The only thing I might add is:

on the left, right next to the light horseman, that archer is wearing a gambeson. That would be good for light infantry. Gambeson was just multi-layered padded clothing. It was basically what all peasant soldiers would have used.

@thecains - Ok, after some testing with various models I managed to come up with a combination which I think looks pretty nice for some new designs for the mid and late game Celts. I've posted some links below, showing the in-game appearance on the right and the image I used as a base on the left. Hopefully the links work:

Mid-game: https://ibb.co/GPhXKPb

Late-game: https://ibb.co/SnsYbq7 (Essentially German heavy infantry with different shield)

As someone who seems to have some knowledge on Medieval Celtic warfare and weaponry, I'd greatly appreciate your feedback before making any decisions regarding updating the mod.

@thecains - Thanks! I'll try to throw a design together and, if it looks decent enough to replace the current model, I'll consider adding it.

From what I could find, until the late middle ages, they mostly used padded clothing (gambeson) and chain mail. In the late middle ages, it's pretty much the same as English. Viking and Anglo-Saxon clothing mixed together should look fairly accurate. Round shields and Kite Shields are what they used, along with anglo-saxon and viking style swords.
