Russian Empire, 1906

Legendary haunting waltz, written by Russian military composer, regimental conductor Il'ja Shatrov. During the Russo-Japanese war, the 214th Mokshansky Infantry Regiment received the order “The banner and the band forward!” in the Battle of Mukden, which meant an almost suicidal attack by the last remaining forces. Shatrov took a personal part in this battle and then composed this music. Author's version of the lyrics are used in this video, the song is performed by Kiril Pantalejev.

Portrayed by General Aleksej Kuropatkin (1848—1925), a notable Russian commander, who did not live up to his expectations and didn't manage to achieve victory on land in the Russo-Japanese war.
