DSV-3 Turtle

解説
DSV-3 Turtle is a Deep Submersible Vehicle built in 1968 and operated by the US Navy until 1998. Originally designed to be capable of diving to 6000FT she was later refitted with her more famous sister's (DSV-2 Alvin) old steel crew sphere, which gave her the capability of diving to 10000FT. She spent most of her career assisting with the recovery of Naval equipment and vehicles in the Pacific Ocean, and toward the end of her career explored the Hydrothermal vents in the Guaymas Basin. She now resides at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut on permanent display.

The Stormworks Turtle I designed to mimic her real world counterpart as closely as possible and she is capable of reaching any depth ingame. I should also mention she is not fast and I recommend having a support ship available to transport her to and from the dive site. She is balanced pretty well and can be lifted by a crane (by use of the lifting "T" with relative ease) without tipping. However be advised she is VERY heavy and can cause even large ships to list when being brought aboard.

OPERATION:

  • Board the DSV and power up the required breakers on the upper panel located to your left
  • When cleared to dive open all the vents. Observe both vent lights indicate open. They will close automatically when full
  • Turtle will descend at roughly 2 FT/SEC; when you approach the bottom drop the "Descent Ballast Weight" she will now be almost neutrally buoyant.
  • You can now use the Propellers to move about.
*Note: the Stern Propeller when used will allow the the DSV to move fore/aft with a minimal amount of depth fluctuation.
*Note: Combining the use of the Port and Starboard Propeller pods will allow you to increase or decrease your depth.
  • To ascend, release the "Ascent Ballast Weight".
  • Once near the surface you can Blow all the tanks to breach the surface

Things to remember:
  • Submersibles have a limited power supply, don't turn on power draining systems if you aren't using them.
  • Turtle's buoyancy is largely controlled by its ballast weight system (like its real world counterpart). To reload the Ballast Weight Assemblies there are two buttons located under the submersible that must be pressed to do so. ***ENSURE ALL BALLAST SWITCHES ARE OFF BEFORE PRESSING***
  • If you plan a long voyage bring along some means of keeping the battery charged.

MANIPULATOR CONTROLS:

The Turtle has two manipulators or arms. The starboard arm is more dexterous, while the port arm is more coarse. I designed the controls to mimic real hydraulics. This is because when Turtle was fitted with these arms electric motors had not yet been developed to cope with deep sea operations. So I would recommend making small/short inputs with the arrow keys. To select which joint to control, first power up the arm with the respective master switch located on the left panel, then select the joint to move. When finished you can "Park" or return the arm to its default/stowed position by turning its master switch off, or leave it on if you wish the arm to remain extended.

CAMERAS:
I held off on uploading this DSV until we had the 7.3 update so I could include cameras, of which there are two. One faces forward and has a limited amount of traverse, while the other is fixed, facing downward towards the manipulators. Due to the limits of the technology at the time, and depth, video was not transmitted to the surface, but was recorded on VHS tapes for viewing later when back aboard the support ship. Therefore, the Stormworks Turtle cannot transmit video.

I hope you enjoy the DSV-3 Turtle and your able to receive you "10k Deep Club" certificate!
Also, many thanks to Capt. Spider for allowing us the use of the FX Marine!

ENJOY!

UPDATE 01 OCT 2021:
- Upgraded and simplified the Ballast Control system
- Submersible is now capable of being reused by pressing the "Replace Ballast Weight Assembly" button located under the submersible.
* Reference the screenshot for it's location
- Sphere Hatch now locks due to the pressure difference once submerged

The pressurized sphere is in the maritime museum in Virginia, pretty cool

ajlawson0626, that's it's real name "DSV-3 Turtle", Alvin was DSV-2. There is a picture of the real thing at the end of the screenshots above, or look up 'DSV-3 Turtle'. Turtle, Alvin, and Sea Cliff were all 'sisters', infact Turtle ended up getting Alvin's old pressure sphere. Hope that helps!

squeaker0704, yup should be good since the day after they fixed the issues with composite CoM.

squeaker0704, since Friday's update there is a bug with composites where they weight more then they are supposed to. Hopefully we see a fix soon, and if need be I will fix this. Sorry for the inconvenience.
