All the Types of Anime Fan Service, Documented and Explored (for when your game is paused)

Fanservice. It’s that sexual stuff that you see in anime that get fans all hot and bothered! Everyone has an opinion about its place in anime, but I’m going to argue that fans have too narrow a definition of fan service. So, in the name of research, let’s look at all the types of fan service!

Sexual
Why, hello there my friend. Most of us are well versed in sexual fan service. For some, it’s the only reason to live. For others, it’s an eternal enemy they are waging war with. Let’s look at the many types of sexual fan service.

Vertical pan shots: The camera goes bottom-up or top-down to showcase a character’s entire body. Crosses over with (fe)male gaze.

Downward shot: Cheap way to show cleavage, especially during a “serious” talking scene. Crosses over with (fe)male gaze.

Tight clothing: Can you think of a better way to show off a character’s figure? Bonus points for them literally busting out of their clothes.

Swimsuit: Less is more, and you can be equal opportunity!

Shirtless: This is an easy way to get “manservice” in your anime. Just plop in a few shirtless guys (especially if they are about to fight), and your good to go! Some people don’t consider this as sexual fan service since it’s considered lazy and too prevalent.

Shower scene: Thematically speaking, the shower scene can be used to symbolize a few things – a character is searching for clarity or they are “washing” themselves of a decision or a bad experience. It can also be a great excuse to show nudity. Crosses over with (fe)male gaze, and is synonymous with the hot springs scene.

Fondling: Pretty self-explanatory. Just go full-on animal mode on a girl’s boobs. Bonus points for water balloon-type movement.

Exaggerated poses: This can be a cool way to show off a character’s body structure or to increase the drama of a scene. You could also show off some cleavage in the ladies or the fine ab lines in guys.

Suggestive eating: Phallic shaped popsicle + anime girl = dirty thoughts.

Suggestive fluids: It’s just milk.

Kissing: Usually is innocent enough, but can go to lewd territory real quick.

Yuri: Only the ones that showcase girls sucking face all day long. Doesn’t have to just be the yuri genre, but can include the “yuri girl” or the “yuri tease.”

Yaoi: Same as the yuri explanation, just swap the girls with guys.

(Fe)male gaze: Shots that are laser-focused on a specific body part – butt, boobs, abs, thighs, or jock. Usually presented with multiple shots (called fragmenting), with the face of the character being shown last. The (fe)male gaze is a slang term used to refer to the audience preferring to “check out” the body before the face. Most scenes will jokingly end with “my eyes are up here, buddy!”

Female gaze version:

Changing: Show off that bod while changing those rags.

Gainaxing: Boobs are extra jiggly and will wobble with every subtle movement.

Panties: You don’t need an explanation, do you?
In-group
This refers to a subset of fans having shared knowledge of a topic. Look, we all have a little hipster in us, and the in-group mentality helps to keep that beast happy. In-group is also the best case that fanservice is not always sexual in nature.

References: Pretty basic, right? A series refers back to an older installment, the director’s other works, or a seiyuu’s previous role. The more obscure, the better.

Parodies: These are similar to references. They tend to be more obvious than a simple dialogue reference, but you still need previous knowledge to get it. Gintama is famous for this, which has led it to be called “the anime fan’s anime.”

Easter eggs: These sneakies tend to be in the background hiding. If you blink, you’ll miss it! They don’t have to be related to the series either, like the Pulp Fiction Easter egg in Kill la Kill.

Wordplay: Puns, but mainly double entendre. It’s always funny whenever someone has a delayed reaction to a dirty joke.

Breaking the fourth wall: You acknowledge the viewers. Usually, a character might “look at the camera” and wink after a joke or they see something lewd. Characters could mention that they are in anime, or speed up re-caps by saying “but our viewers just saw that!”
Emotional
Emotional fanservice is just as prevalent as sexual, but it is done in a more subtle way. If fanservice is giving the fans what they want and getting a positive reaction, then it makes sense that emotional games will be played. Some of them will cross over with sexual to get the desired effect.

Moe: A slang term that describes a feeling you have when you see a character. Affection, amusement, excitement, devotion, or any other positive deep feeling towards a character. Look, it’s when your heart gets an erection, okay?

Justice porn: When a hated character gets what they deserve. It doesn’t have to revolve around death, the character could be told off or lose a fight due to their arrogance. Usually, this doesn’t happen until deep into the series, so the pay off is all the sweeter.

Gorn: Excessive amounts of gore. Seinen action shows or horror titles can be entirely gorn if their point is just excessive bloodshed, or it could be a single scene.

Scenery porn: Breathtaking shots of incredibly detailed scenery. They are a great way to show off the hard work that artists put into the backgrounds, and should leave the viewer in awe. Bonus points for an epic score playing!

Extended mecha sequences: Strictly for the mecha-sexuals. Those long startup sequences before the mecha leave the hanger, detailed looks inside the cockpits, and scenes, where the mecha are being put together, are stimulating for many mecha fans.

Transformation sequences: The first transformation is always overly long and highly detailed. Usually, the camera spinning around, zooming in on specific body parts that are transforming, all with a magical song playing! Can be sexual, depending on the target audience of the series.

Final battles: This is why you’ve been following that one action series all season long. Sure, the characters grew on you and the story was surprisingly nice, but it’s all about the final fight scene. Studios specializing in action anime know how important this battle is, so they try to save up as much budget as possible for it. Can crossover with justice porn.

Blushing: Doesn’t your heart go doki-doki when you see a character’s face turn all red? In real life, it’s an involuntary reaction that is usually caused by embarrassment.

While embarrassing for the blusher, a Dutch study showed that when someone blushes, the people around them are more likely to form a positive opinion of the blusher. This is because blushing exposes the person on a personal level since it’s most likely cause by you subconsciously acknowledging an embarrassing moment. And no one wants to kick someone who is mentally exposed to the world. Can crossover with defrosting.

Defrosting: The defrosting moment is when a character – usually a tsundere or a jerk – momentarily lets their guard down. Maybe they blush at a compliment? Maybe they showed up to a proposed date? It could also be that you saw them crying for a brief moment. Usually is a big part of wish fulfillment in romance series. “They don’t hate me, they just needed me to prove myself!” or “I’m the only one who understands them!” are common signals of this.

Crosses over heavily with tsundere and self-insert character.

Self-insert character: This is why harem protags are bland and lifeless. Think of them as a JRPG character. They may have a name and a preset “character”, but you’re supposed to mentally project yourself in their place. It’s not Kirito doing all the awesome things and getting the girls, it’s you.

Tsundere: Science and relationship therapists have said that playing hard to get is an attractive trait for many people. There are two reasons for this in the real world. First, the tsundere is perceived as being a “rare resource,” which increases their desirability. Second, the person who cracks the tsundere perceives that they are the only person worthy of having the tsundere – i.e., they won the rare resource.

How is this emotional fanservice? Well, we combine it with the self-insert character. It’s not the main character who is winning the tsundere’s affection, it’s you. And that is a big deal on a psychological level.

Yandere: We’re getting into relationship theory here. Basically, one of the reasons to be in a relationship of some sort is to satisfy your innate need to be wanted and appreciated. And guess what the yandere does? They just want the protag and to make them happy. Since the protag tends to be a self-insert, that means they want you by proxy.

Deny it all you want, but this is why yandere types are so popular. They fill that subconscious need of being wanted and desired. Plus crazy is kind of hot…

That got kind of deep. Who knew fan service had layers? I…I think I need to go lay down for a bit…
