What to Bring at Night
By Tater Biscuit
This War of Mine has a lot of hidden loot. In this pro-tip guide, I will be listing what equipment is needed at each location in order to reach all the loot you could want.

Plan The Night!
The following is a list of all locations in This War of Mine in the order I would recommend visiting along with what items should be brought for complete access. Please note that it is important to take many trips to get all the resources required to survive the war. The early game is vital, and I highly recommend that players take the first few nights to clear the first few locations before moving on. This will allow for upgraded bases and the ability to create better equipment for accessing loot in other locations. Keep in mind that with my list, not all doors will be unlocked or cut through; some rooms have multiple entrances or mini-quests to get you in.

Another tip is that lockpicks can be substituted with a crowbar. Early in the game, it is probably best to use a crowbar because of the lack of parts early on; the crowbar is easy to make and lasts quite a long time. Also, shovels are optional, but they do increase digging speed.

There are also many places with danger lurking around every corner! If you are unsure of how dangerous a location may be, bring a weapon for your first trip and bring the equipment later. It is way harder to loot supplies to keep your group alive if there are bandits attacking you.
The First Week
The first few nights are going to change the outcome of the survival for your group. Planning your routes and retrieving as many resources in as little time as possible will benefit the survivors greatly. Your first week should be spent gathering from the following locations:

  • Abandoned Cottage
    • 2 Lockpicks, 1 Shovel
  • Shelled Cottage
    • 2 Lockpicks, 1 Shovel
  • Looted Gas Station
    • 1 Lockpick, 1 Saw, 1 Shovel
  • Ruined Block of Flats
    • 2 Saws
  • Decrepit Squat
    • 1 Lockpick, 1 Saw, 1 Food
Mid-Game Stride
Once the base has its defenses set up, and a decent amount of workshops are ready for use, it will be time to seriously reach out and gather from the more war-ravaged areas of the city. The following locations are a bit helpful, but may cause some strife for the survivors:

  • Quiet House
    • 2 Lockpicks
  • Supermarket
    • 1 Knife, 2 Lockpicks, 1 Shovel
  • Shelled School
    • 1 Lockpick, 2 Saws, 1 Shovel
  • Garage
    • 1 Lockpick, 1 Saw
  • Central Square or Sniper Junction
    • 1 Lockpick, 2 Saws
On a Roll
You should be well established by this point. Lots of resources to build up the base and create plenty of equipment. Remember that food is a huge priority and that you need to constantly find more supplies to keep things going. Now that you're on a roll, here's the rest of the many difficult places you should be able to visit:

  • Semi-Detached House
    • 2 Lockpicks, 2 Saws
  • Small Apartment Building
    • 2 Lockpicks, 1 Shovel
  • Port
    • 2 Lockpicks, 1 Saw
  • Ghost House
    • 1 Lockpick, 1 Saw
  • Old Town
    • 2 Lockpicks, 1 Saw, 1 Shovel
  • Ruined Villa
    • 2 Lockpicks
  • City Hospital
    • 3 Lockpicks
  • St. Mary's Church
    • 2 Saws, 1 Shovel
  • Construction Site
    • 2 Lockpicks, 2 Saws
  • Warehouse
    • 2 Lockpicks, 2 Saws
  • Hotel
    • 5 Lockpicks, 1 Shovel
      • 2 Lockpicks minimum with a lot of patience
  • Brothel
    • 2 Lockpicks, 2 Saws
  • Airport
    • 1 Lockpick, 1 Shovel
  • Military Outpost
    • 4 Lockpicks, 3 Saws
Finished Ransacking
That concludes my tips-and-tricks for This War of Mine. I purposefully provided nothing more than what to bring to gather resources. Many locations need weapons and armor, too. This is my first ever Community Guide on Steam and I would greatly appreciate feedback from other players. I will make changes to the guide for recommended equipment if I am provided information that I may have missed.

I wanted to make this guide because I always wanted to know what to bring with me at night so that I could get the most out of every run. I hope it helps any would-be war survivors out there.

also, if your Supermarket is the Scavenger's :bandages1: one, you will need only 1 Crowbar or 2 Lockpick, letting the Shovel free :steamthis:

Construction site is 2 saws, 1 lockpick, one at the very bottom, one at the very top & lockpick somewhere in the middle

Fixes: 2x lockpick at Supermarket is pointless without a shovel. And, as Dragon mentions, without a weapon you miss out on the special encounter.

Dragon, I completely agree. It is the same with the Airport, but I think going in with a weapon for a first run is the safest thing to do at most locations. I specifially left weapons off my list with the premise that they ought to be a given item for dangerous locations. But again, you are totally right.

For the supermarket, you should bring a Knife, this will allow you to take out the soldier, and get your first AR and 25 rounds

This is quite useful. Thank you
