Description
Hello! This is, to my current knowledge, the first working fully mechanical (physics based) Gearbox uploaded to the Workshop.

It features 4 Gears:
- 1st
- 2nd
- Reverse
- Neutral

There is an oddity, where 1st gear should be slower but have more torque than 2nd, it doesnt. It is faster and has more torque (Due to gear slipping from the simplified physics of the game).

Reverse gear is janky, but the faster the speed, the better it will preform. The diagrams above will help you better understand how it works.

Along with my U-Joints, Piston Engines (Not released yet), and this gearbox, I just need to get a differential to work, wether it is a Worm gear or Bevel gear driven.

Feel free to check it out!

Thanks!

-CPM

(I also realize in the gear diagram, the gear are rotating the wrong way, put the diagram's point stands)

Not too sure about ahead of my time, but thank you nonetheless.

Good to hear you may return again.
You were just ahead of your time with physics based mechanics.

I did not see many constructions that just rely on simple mechanics, it's still not a hot topic really, but there definitely ARE examples.
But this gearbox of yours is the most notable.
My chains experiment has already gotten 200+ views in under a week, so I hope I peaked other people's interests too and this genre will soon steamroll the workshop :D

Ill look into re-downloading and messing around with the editor again if time permits, as I have always wanted to see some sort of physics based mechanical system community develop itself in the SW, but I suppose its taken me 2 years to hear about that, haha! None of the community seems to have much of an interest past things that look pretty or logic systems/LUA. Maybe that will change at some point. However the janky nature of the physics still presents itself as an issue to be tackled.

Ill see what I made regarding engines, as I recall making very primitive Triple Expansion engines as well as some various piston systems. Most of my work in private was more so catered to the automotive engineering side, or marine I suppose. But a clock as you say sounds like quite the tall order, if you create that i'm sure that will garner itself as quite a popular creation.

You may just convince me to start looking at Stormworks again...

I if I remember correctly, the reason I have the pivots mounted on the gears were for tighter spacing between the teeth for smoother operation. With a four tooth gear that was just a plus, they had too much play in them, so adding more teeth would assist in the transfer of power between the gears. I think for the application here I accepted the loss in torque.

However I am curious what the new blocks could be used for in regarding increasing the bite between the gears or other mechanical devices. The chains you linked below are fantastic and a lot of what you have created has some interesting applications... maybe a planetary gear system would be possible to create? The chain concept could also be manipulated to act as a belt driving wheels as well. My oh my the applications is exciting to think about.

And please keep me informed! If you use discord feel free to add me, CPM#3638 or send me a request on steam.

In long:
I've been looking at recreating a working mechanical clock, but I need soooo many parts before I can even design one.

-A functional non-clipping chain (made a whole map on it: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2266173929)
-A chain driver (buddy's project: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2274993996)
-A weight... well that's easy
-cogs, gears, sprockets, flywheels. (made the flywheels already: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2271343779)
-bolts, winches, hinges (made those too: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2272736984)

These sprockets of yours will definitely help me on my way. I'm looking at ditching the pivots though, but only because that's where the torque is lost.
When I get to it I will experiment with some of my own ideas on workloads your machine can perform.

In short
1. This still works. 1b Reverse is still a bit grindy as it was back then.
2. The slipping is where I will try to make improvements.
3. The pivots to give the teeth an angle are truly brilliant and make it nice looking, but I think that's where it loses most functionality. It will slip if you put any workload on the yellow one.

I'll keep you updated on the advancements.

Oh wow its been a while since any of my stuff has gotten a comment.

Due note that this was created in September of 2018, and I am unsure if any physics have changed to make this design obsolete, as I have set the game down for over a year at this point.

However I am glad this has brought some inspiration to you! I myself was working to get a full drive train system to function but stopped before that could happen. If I remember correctly the main issues with this system stems from the lack of torque that could be transmitted between the gears due to slippages caused by the blocks clipping through each other.

Also go ahead and use this if you want, but I would probably find a way to reinforce the design if you are going to put it inside a vehicle, since its so old at this point. I would take a look at some 3 speed manual automotive transmissions since those would be easier to replicate rather a more standard 5 or 6 speed.

Very interesting!
I made chains and wanted to have sprockets to drive the chains, I'm also planning to make tanktracks out of segments.
This mechanism will be very beneficial to my idea, I will let you know and I'll ask beforehand if I use any of it in my uploads.

Thanks for the inspiration!
