the difficulty in the description has been adjusted accordingly (was leaning towards Hard anyway)

I think the puzzle and the dead-end are really clever but only if the solver is not used to bugs in the puzzle and doesn't assume such things are bugs.

So to all the would-be solvers of this puzzle: not a bug. Just an actually good puzzle.

Oh. I now see.

That's kind of a strange dead-end then. I'm not sure if I like it or not.

The solution: Switch turns on laser and locked electric motor. Motor moves the wrecking ball. Laser shines in a laser repeater. Laser repeater activates unlocked electric motor and cat-o-matic. The big and small gears slowly rotate the jack-in-the-box and other conveyer belt that moves Waldo. Waldo is under the cage before it drops. Jack-in-the-box pops and wrecking ball gets dragged by bird cage.

I ran into the same issue. The trick is figuring out the right sequence of rotating parts. Once I figured that out, I ended up solving the way J3LLY intended.

I seem to be having a lot of trouble with timing puzzles these days and I am beginning to think it's the game and not me. In this one, when I set the laser repeater to 1 s the mouse doesn't make its way to the cheese in time. At 2 s the cage closes too quickly. And that's with everything geared in the obviously correct way.

This happened to me previously with a WGS puzzle.

Another good one!
