If you go Life Exchange (which seems to be the current meta in competitive), you really want to use the illusions primarily as means to teleport yourself to safety. Sometimes, you might even want to place them somewhere where they won't heal your teammates, as long as they are a safe location for you to teleport to when things get serious.
By the way, that's one of the reasons why people go Life Exchange - you can heal with your right click and use your illusions as safe teleport points. This allows you to survive against good (Master+) flankers and damagers.
