You may want to use this guide if:
  • You want to increase the resolution of Tomb Raider up to your largest supported resolution.
  • You experience crashes in the game, such as after the intro movie or when using Alt-Tab.
  • The game is too bright.
  • Items are sometimes visible through walls.
  • You want to enable V-Sync to fix screen tearing.

Downloading and Installing nGlide
The program nGlide is a 3Dfx Voodoo Glide wrapper created by Zeus Software[www.zeus-software.com]. It will be used instead of the Glide graphics files included with the Steam version of Tomb Raider. It provides some useful configuration options and better compatibility.
  • Go to http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide and click the download button to get the installation file.
  • Run the downloaded file and click the Install button. When it has finished installing click the Close button.
  • Navigate to your Steam Tomb Raider folder. By default this is located somewhere similar to: "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Tomb Raider (I)".
  • Rename the file glide2x.dll to glide2x_backup.dll so that Tomb Raider no longer accesses it.

Alternate Method
If nGlide doesn't seem to be working after following the above method, try this alternate method:
  • Download and install nGlide[www.zeus-software.com] the same as before.
  • Navigate to the folder that contains the nGlide files which is located at:
    32bit OS users: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\"
    64bit OS users: "C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\"
  • Find and copy the files called nglide_config.exe and glide2x.dll.
  • Navigate to your Steam Tomb Raider folder. By default this is located somewhere similar to: "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Tomb Raider (I)".
  • Paste the two files here and overwrite the existing file if asked.

Whichever method you used, Tomb Raider will now use the new nGlide file instead of the one packaged with Tomb Raider. However to get the most out of it you should configure it first.
Configuring nGlide for Tomb Raider
The nGlide Configurator has several options you can use to improve the look of Tomb Raider. To use it look for the nGlide folder in your Start Menu and click the Configurator program. If you want to locate it on your computer manually it should be installed at one of the following locations:
32bit OS users: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\nglide_config.exe"
64bit OS users: "C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\nglide_config.exe"
If you followed the alternate method for installing nGlide, the configurator should be located in your Steam Tomb Raider folder.

Screen Resolution
Recommended Setting: The highest supported resolution for your screen
For the best visuals it is best to put the maximum resolution your screen supports. The drop-down list has many resolutions that may be beyond your screens limits, so make sure to pick the one that is correct.
If you've no idea what your current resolution is visit http://www.whatismyscreenresolution.com/ to find out what you're currently using and select that.
Higher resolutions will require more processing power so if you're suffering from poor performance you should select a lower resolution.

Aspect Ratio
Recommended Setting: 4:3
Tomb Raider was originally designed to use a 4:3 aspect ratio so it is best to select the 4:3 option from the drop down list. If you don't do this, a widescreen resolution will stretch the image making everything look wider then it should be.

Refresh Rate
Recommended Setting: By app (Default)
It is recommended to leave this as the default option unless you have a specific reason not to.

Vertical Synchronization
Recommended Setting: On (Default)
This option removes the screen tearing that can occur on some computers.

Gamma Correction
Recommended Setting: 0.7
Tomb Raider on PC is substantially brighter then it should be. Using gamma correction you can reduce the brightness to be closer to a more normal level. You may want to try out different values for this option to see which feels the best.

3dfx logo splash screen
Recommended Setting: Off
Set this to off to remove one of the 3dfx logo splash screens.

An example screenshot of the nGlide Configurator for a screen with a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. Your resolution may be different.

After you have finished setting the options for the nGlide Configurator, click the Apply button and then the Exit button. Now launch Tomb Raider and to see if the new settings have taken effect.

All credit goes to Zeus Software[www.zeus-software.com] for the creation of nGlide[www.zeus-software.com].
(Optional) DOSbox resolution
While the main game will use the resolution set in the nGlide Configurator, the videos in the game will use the resolution set by DOSbox. By changing the DOSbox resolution you can avoid the annoying resolution switch and oversized Steam Overlay that occurs while a video is playing. Please note that this won't increase the quality of the videos in any way.
  • Navigate to your Steam Tomb Raider folder again.
  • Find the file called dosboxTR.conf and open it with a text editor.
  • Do a search for the text fullresolution= under the [sdl] section.
  • Change it to the same resolution you put in nGlide. So for example I use the resolution 1680x1050 and so would change that line of text to be:
    fullresolution=1680x1050
  • If you want to stop the videos stretching, do a search for the text aspect= under the [render] section.
  • Change it so it now reads:
    aspect=true
  • Save and close the file.
Tomb Raider I will now run at the same resolution consistently throughout the whole game.

Or you can download the Automated fix

This sets the game up to your native resolution. I'm up to the cistern without any crashes at 5120x1440 with lots of alt-tabbing.

I tried both methods but the resolution hasn't changed.

After a lot of experimenting trying to get Tomb Raider I to run I tried the method in this guide and it worked.

There's a few things that I feel are important to note about using this method.

* This method does not work if I update DOSBox from the version that is bundled with Tomb Raider I.
* Only the alternate method in this article worked for me.
* This only worked for me when I changed the resolution in nglide and dosboxTR.conf to match my desktop resolution.
* Activating vsync in both nglide and the dosboxTR.conf caused the game to crash.

I'm really glad this method worked for me, because I didn't like the idea of having to install the Unfinished Business mod.

Oh great, now i can play in full screen!!! BUT....
I still have 3 problems though...well, 2, the 3rd one is not really a problem:

1. After setting brightness to 0.7 in "nglide_config.exe" the game brightnes is still to bright. Nothing has changed.

2. I have scan-lines on cut-scenes.

3. After disabling 3D-fx logo...i can still see it when game starts.

Any advice, please?
