It's pretty good, none of my hours spent playing felt wasted, very rich and engaging story - even for a video game. I recommend trying out all the stranger missions, bounties, and side missions with your gang. Most, if not all the side content in the game has been hand written, rather than randomly generated like most open world games out there. After completing the main campaign I look forward to going back and hunting all the legendary creatures and other challenges for 100% completion.

I personally don't find Arthur Morgan to be as interesting a character as John Marston from rdr1, but I think this is complemented by the rich and nuanced characters that surround him and that he shares experiences with. This is very much a roleplaying game, and getting to play the role of an aging outlaw on the run in one of the last gangs of the wild west is quite enticing. There are numerous little micro-mechanics that keep you engaged with at all: gameplay wise, graphics wise, and game-world wise. But at the same time, you're playing a character that isn't you, you're acting out someone else's desires and intentions - making the game feel more linear than it needs to be. It does make the main story much more interesting, and perhaps much easier to write, having a protagonist with predetermined reactions to characters and events, but it leaves immersion mechanics like the karma system feeling a bit ham-fisted. I enjoyed playing as Arthur, but I hope R* can someday make an open-world RPG with a true, 1st person protagonist. I'm sure they would do a much better job than Bethesda or CD Projekt Red at it.

Runs a very smooth 60fps on the Steam Deck, even on decent settings, but you'll get 20fps trying to pull much more than 720p. I experienced frequent crashes, often right in the middle of a mission where I could not save and there was no checkpoints. But my trick for dealing with this was to let the Deck go on sleep mode for a few minutes, or to restart the game entirely. I think it might be some kind of "memory leak" issue, but that's just something I read online. The crashes became less frequent after I let my console cool down for a while, so it might be a temperature issue as well. It definitely wasn't unplayable, though, just an added hassle that I had to deal with every couple hours.

I will attempt to talk about the ending without mentioning spoilers, but you can skip this part if you don't believe me. I liked the first ending quite a bit, it was very well made, but the epilogue was not so fulfilling. Knowing what happens in the 1st game, it not only felt more tragic than it needed to be, it also felt kind of odd in the timeline of events. I don't like how nice and peaceful and wholesome it left the characters, considering how I will likely be exchanging more than enough bullets in all the side content I missed, and how much things will change in the years, or months till the events of the first game. I already know what's going to happen to these people next, how is leaving the game here meant to feel satisfying? I would have much prefered if it ended with you starting fresh with someone without so many loose ends to tie or to be untied.

Anyways, jolly good show, play rdr1 after this game instead of before if you can.
