This review is written from the perspective of predominantly co-op PvE mission experiences.

Arma 3 is a military sandbox that serves as a basic foundation for the players to build upon by downloading and developing mods for the purpose of tailoring the experience to their own liking. You can use mods to simulate practically any era and situation you want.

I've played in the following eras:
World War 2, Vietnam, Falklands War, Cold War, Gulf War, Global War on Terror, Modern, Star Wars.

I've been primarily an infantry player, most common vehicle being HMMWV or equivalent. As an infantry player I have done a lot of stuff ranging from foot patrols and vehicle convoys to parachute drops, air assaults and amphibious operations.

I've performed a variety of roles:
Infantry, Reconnaissance, Medical, Engineering, Sniper, Communications, Command, Special Forces.

What I am trying to get across with all this is that Arma 3 lets you do whatever you want within reason.
Want to just shoot people? Go for a regular infantry role.
Want to collect and report intelligence in an area? Go for a reconnaissance role.
Want to keep your friends alive? Go for a medical role.
Want to do mine clearing? Go for an engineering role.
Want to support friendly movement by providing supporting fire? Go for a sniper role.
Want to call in close air support and medical evacuations or transport? Go for a radioman role.
Want to lead a squad and coordinate with other leaders? Go for a leadership role.
Want to perform quick raids and exfil quickly? Go for a special forces role.
Want to transport friendly units or provide close air support? Go for a pilot role.

Note that I did not mention armor in that list. Armor modelling is rather inconsistent across mods and therefore is not particularly viable in my experience

It's an incredible foundation, it's exceptionally badly optimized, and it's the most flexible game ever.
