But death certainly, and life, honour and dishonour, pain and pleasure, all these things equally happen to good men and bad, being things which make us neither better nor worse. Therefore they are neither good nor evil.

Be cheerful also, and seek not external help nor the tranquility which others give. A man then must stand erect, not be kept erect by others.

Do not act as if thou wert going to live ten thousand years. Death hangs over thee

So a man when he has done a good act, does not call out for others to come and see, but he goes on to another act

Be not disgusted, nor discouraged, nor dissatisfied, if thou dost not succeed in doing everything according to right principles; but when thou hast failed, return back again

Nothing happens to any man which he is not formed by nature to bear
