Let me tell you what these forum fanboys wont tell you:
The expansion was the Best, the story was amazing, the villain interesting and connected, the side-quest we get after finishing the main story its amazing, and you get to kill the iconic boss from d1 and HE GOES MECHA this time, the amount of content is amazing, really amazing, the season we had at the time of the expansion was short but with really good story so couple some content with good content, we get the feeling all the money spend is worth it... Stasis the new subclass renewed the game, made a new meta of pvp , while still being fun to play with pve, so if you like pvp, be ready to adapt to the meta...
More than half our arsenal was retired, because SOME WEPONS WERE BROKEN OP. We got amazing new weapon spots after sunset, that are slowing getting back to wath it was and we got a ton of NEW PERKS . Sunset was sunset, and its better than never.

Start the game as a new player is a amazing, you get a tutorial that is pretty fun and helps you understand how the game works. The main game is amazing with alot of amazing cutscenes and a plot really good, you are thrown into the game knowing what to do, where to go, and making sense of the current state of things, cosmodrome is a amazing, It helps improve new player experience and is stillg getting updated to help new players, , this is probably utter amazingness, because if bungies track record is anything to go by, they are really good at making a game and tunning it.

Oh yeah, pvp, is amazing, its heaven on earth for anybody that wants some competetive fun, and crossplay is coming, but they kepping the separete on pvp (you can still play with them if you former a mix lobby prior to machmaking). So yeah, the current destiny 2 experience is great, the new season looks amazing, stasis got slightly nerfed, will get nerfed more in the future, trials is trials and if you are not good enough you can still get the first drop without even winning one game!

Honestly i can recomend destiny 2 in it's current state, even if all the entirety of the game was free, i say entirety because in order to get the full experience, you just need 3 expansions that goes on sale all time literally ALL THE TIME, and if you want more content you can buy seasonal content, oh yeah and all the best character and weapon skins you can get then for free was long was you play the game, and most skins even look amazing, compared to destiny 1 i think the artist team at bungie designing this amazingness must be really good professionals working on the game, because they make good looking loot for the game for the past 3 or 4 years, and its not easy! they really feel motivated to work on this amazing game.

But try it and find it for yourself!
