A fun action rogue-lite and "city"-sim game. Combat feels pretty good, though some hits feel cheap on occasion. A short game at 10-15 hours to 100% it, but worth the price.

I really want to like this game. I've played through all of the content it has to offer, beaten every monster, reached master rank 120+. This game could easily be an 8/10 product, but the absolutely abysmal hitboxes brings this title down HARD to around a 4/10 experience. I'd offer a cash reward to anyone that could find a game with worse hitboxes in it.

Never, in any game in over 30 years, have I been hit by so many attacks that clearly missed me, nor missed by so many attacks that clearly should have hit me. Attacks that are dodged, and even have the game tell you that you've dodged, still hit you.

One of Rise's main gimmicks is that you can use wirebugs to counter attacks, or add verticality to your attacks. The issue with this is that your counters fail constantly because the monster's attacks just don't register properly. Either they go straight through you, or hit you anyway with the character not performing the defensive action. And if you thought you were safe in the air, guess again. Currently flying more than twice the monster's height in the air? You just got smacked by a low claw sweep not 1 foot off the ground. Attacking the tail? The bite attack at someone else in front of him just hit you. Attacking the face? The tail swipe just blew you away. On the back left leg? That right front claw just caught you.

It feels like every single attack in the game creates a 20-foot dome around the monster, and you just take damage if you're anywhere in it. Or if you prepare for it, you do nothing, because it decided not to register that time for no reason. It's incredibly frustrating for the game to constantly punish the player for something they can't prevent, prepare, or adapt to in any way. I simply can not, in good faith, recommend a product so janky and lacking in quality in such a critical area.

Edit: After putting in another 130 hours, I can firmly say it's even worse than initially written. The hitboxes are unforgivably terrible. Just cart after cart from attacks not even remotely in the same timezone as my character. I've downgraded my initial 4/10 to a 2/10. This game should be removed from the store due to being a literal broken product.

Do Not Buy This Game.

Early Access Review
A charming and fun adventure game. Gameplay feels responsive and fluid. In the couple weeks since the early access release, the developers have already put out several bug fix patches, many quality of life changes, and implemented feedback from the community.

The current $25 price point may be a bit steep for the current amount of content, but I see strong bones and a definite love from the developers for their creation. I have no doubt this will become an even finer product as they add content to it.

A very fun and beautiful twin-stick shooter, but impaired by many bugs and poor game design choices. The combat is quick, visceral, responsive, and exciting, while things like locked doors/chests won't open even though you're supposed to have access to them, or quest trails that lead you through areas far, far above the level for them (resulting in instant death), not knowing an enemy's level until you've engaged them (resulting in instant death), and other minor bugs like weapons being unable to fire after using certain abilities, or a boss spawning 4 copies of itself.

I still think it's fun overall, hence the thumbs up, but expect equal parts greatness and frustration. When it all works: 9/10. When it struggles: 5/10.

Edit: After now completing the game, running into more bugs, more dead ends, and some of the worst game design and balance failures, I've decided to change my review to a thumbs down. This game should have gone through a lengthy beta test first. I see a ton of potential that could have been had the game been given another 6 months of development.

Easily my GOTY for 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Edit: And 2021, 2022, and 2023.

A fun, space dogfighting rogue-like title with progressive upgrades and resource collecting/crafting elements. Tough enemies will lead to many player deaths, but quick reactions and the tightest 6-DoF flight controls I've ever experienced can help you pull through even the toughest battles. At the current price of $30, it's definitely worth looking into if you want a fun, fast space dogfighter.

The Encounters DLC adds several npcs to interact with, and plenty of side-content to complete during your runs, as well as new enemies, weapons, locations of interest, and more. An easy game to recommend to anyone.

Possibly one of the worst multiplayer games I've ever experienced. Weapons are severely unbalanced, abilities are severely unbalanced, grenades are more common than sand in a desert, and each map is nothing more than "2 ways to an objective, both are covered by 4 snipers with 100% accuracy". Oh, and don't forget about the blatant hacking.

Each weapon will cost you dozens of matches to upgrade once, or a few bucks, so those with deep pockets are rolling in gold-plated insta-gib weapons while free players are left watching a respawn screen.

There was one time in my childhood when I nearly cut my finger off. That was far more enjoyable than this game. With a price tag of free, I feel this game ripped me off. I should at least be payed to suffer.
