This is a very pretty game that's simple and relaxing to play. There are some puzzles that aren't too tricky to solve and a handful of abilities to unlock along the way. The fox is cute and its unlockable skins are charming.

Map progression is relatively linear, but there is a lot of running around (please make sprint toggleable) and maps are deceptively large considering how few collectibles there are. The final map felt particularly excessive in size and was a bit tiring to get through.

There are murals here and there that offer little glimpses into what's amiss in the world, but while the symbolism is easy to grasp I found the story to be a bit too vague to clearly understand. Things conclude beautifully, and overall I enjoyed the atmosphere created by the visuals and the music.

Those who like Ori's beautiful art and themes will enjoy SotN, and playing as a fox reminds me a bit of Stray. Just be prepared for little action and a lot of walking.

Pretty fun nostalgia-fueled adventure that's clearly inspired by Banjo Kazooie and Spyro. It could use more polish and still feels a bit like a work-in-progress, but I didn't experience many bugs or gameplay issues. The limited camera angles can be frustrating at times. Overall an impressive first release. I hope we see more content added in the future.

A successful continuation (or prequel) to the first game. Art is still super weird and creepy while act 3 raises the horror levels to the highest point - not quite to Amnesia or Outlast levels, but undeniably tense. They've introduced combat situations in this one that add another element of challenge. Looking forward to seeing more of this bizarre world they've created in LN3.

Imaginative 3D side-scroller with memorably creepy art that disturbs and intrigues without straying too far into conventional horror. It's puzzles are typically pretty simple, but some take some time to figure out. The limited viewing perspective makes landing jumps awkward sometimes but there isn't much that would disappoint anyone who enjoys survival horror.

Elex's combat is clunkier, more poorly balanced, and less enjoyable than in many of its predecessors. Stamina depletion is severely restricting and enemies hit very hard. While weapon scaling is generally fine armor upgrades are very modest. This is a bewildering departure from what was a long tradition of new armor sets boosting resilience significantly. They seem to want you to rely more on blocking and dodging than being able to take more hits, which would be fine if the combat wasn't so poorly tuned to begin with.

Weapon damage, not skill, is the primary factor in being able to progress into more dangerous zones. This means you are at the mercy of how quickly you are able to level up and equip better weapons. The problem is that leveling is prohibitively slow until late in the game. There are also too many talents and not enough skill points to put into them. It's easy to think that spreading out your skill points will make you well-rounded, but it just makes you mediocre at everything. Weapons have very high skill requirements and unless you pour all your points into strength and dexterity you will be dealing low damage and effectively unable to progress much.

Close range combat is bad enough, but ranged is even worse. The addition of several energy/elemental ranged weapons makes groups of enemies even harder to handle. They have incredibly good accuracy while landing hits on them is not easy due to wonky hit boxes and bad target focus. Heavy weapons have terrible scaling with enemies living through 3-4 grenade or rocket blasts.

I did not try using magic much, but the entry level berserker spells were so weak and hard to aim properly that I didn't bother. You simply don't get enough skill points to be able to experiment much, and with no way to reset your points you're locked in to whatever path you've followed. Generally speaking the pacing of progression in this game isn't very good.

There are some positives to mention: the story and post-apocalyptic setting are pretty cool. Quests are interesting and the karma system allows you to take some significantly different approaches to certain interactions. There are some really interesting monster designs and it's nice to see them branch out in some new directions artistically. The jetpack is also a useful time saver.

The truth is that Elex has plenty of quality content to experience but unfortunately the process of accessing it is just not very enjoyable. Piranha Bytes has never had particularly good combat in their games, but this one is quite possibly the worst. I had a hard time finishing the game, and I can usually endure some tedious combat as long as it feels fair. For that reason I sadly cannot really recommend this one.

Take your Risen and add the following:

  • Better combat focus with fluid movements and amusingly long strike distances.
  • Companion-focused exploration that makes combat less punishing but does take away from that early-game scrub status we've come to expect.(Followers should really be a bit less resilient)
  • Multiple islands, boats, and some rudimentary naval combat.
  • More realistic skill progression that requires a balanced ratio of gold to experience.
  • Spell casting with no mana use that blends together better with physical combat and is more viable as a result.
  • An easier but more visually accurate lock picking system.
  • A more complex and challenging final boss encounter than any that preceded it.
  • Boom sticks.
  • 300% more pirates.
  • Uncomfortably flirtatious sibling interactions.
  • Imperialist overtones with a dash of cultural appropriation.

Risen 3 shakes things up in several ways (mostly good) and offers the PB fan another solid installment of exploration, amusing dialogue, and a story that may not be quite on par with those that came before but is still pretty good. Some fans may not like the relative "easiness" of this game, but I found it to be a refreshing change of pace.

As has been expressed in other reviews, the storytelling and dialogue in Tacoma are very well done. The characters are relatable with concerns and inner turmoils that are easy to empathize with. They keep you engaged even when you're delving into the mundane aspects of their lives. The level of detail used to weave together their various backstories within the context of the plot is impressive and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The plot that unfolds brings up real, contemporary issues and keeps the story - taking place decades in the future - anchored pretty close to home. We are given glimpses into how humanity has progressed, and while there is a notable optimism about global prosperity and the expansion of progressive ideals we find that there are innate human flaws and vices that persist no matter how we might strive for perfection or reach for the stars.

This is a game that offers a lot in a small sitting. If you also enjoy strong narratives and detective work this game is for you.

Risen is a worthy successor of the Gothic franchise when it comes to its impressive world building, fun exploration, and good storytelling. They've also enhanced the combat a bit in this installment with the addition of dodging, riposte, and shields, which makes the gameplay feel a little more modernized.

However, while there are technically three factions to choose from, two of them follow virtually the same path. The most satisfying progression comes from joining the bandit faction, which also offers the most freedom early on. The possibility of being forcibly recruited into the inquisition is an interesting idea, but everything after that feels half-baked. It's as though they designed the story with one faction in mind and then asked themselves "what if we just let the player join the antagonists?". For their part the mages feel more like a prestige class than a faction of their own.

In true Gothic style enemies hit hard and are tough in groups. This is especially true of weapon wielders who are very good at blocking and still manage to sneak hits in no matter how fast your combos are. Only after maxing weapon mastery does the combat really become satisfying and feel balanced. Combat spells can be very powerful, but they are also monotonous and require constant mana replenishment. Investing all your skill points into spell mastery and mana also leaves you worthless as a fighter without the combat perks that make the gameplay fun.

On a side note, there is no way to lock onto targets and though the game will soft lock onto an enemy it is very poorly tuned. When an enemy leaves your narrow cone of sight the focus is lost and your character is often left swinging away at the air. Dodging can also be clumsy when you lose your target and end up facing another direction.

Risen struggles with the same clunky movement and combat mechanics as its predecessors, but where it really slips is how it doesn't succeed in making each of its three factions equally fun and viable. For that reason I can't give it a strong a recommendation, but it's still worth checking out if you're a PB fan.

The Righteous:
  • Good level design.
  • Creative art direction with some truly curious boss designs.
  • Balanced combat difficulty with minimal penalty for dying.
  • Good number of secrets and some clever puzzles.
  • Fitting soundtrack that is generally quite good.

The Profane:
  • A couple of important progression items require very convoluted steps to find.
  • Some encounters trigger during very specific windows of opportunity that can be missed. There are at least two situations where accepting or equipping an item is irreversible, which locks you out of completing certain objectives.
  • Some objects have weird hit boxes. Ladders can be tricky to grab while jumping and to avoid grabbing during combat.

Final Judgement:

Blasphemous is worthy of its positive ratings. Like any successful Metroidvania its level progression is fun and complex, with plenty of secrets to uncover. Boss fights are simple but challenging, though not as punishing as Hollow Knight or Souls games, which I personally appreciate. Combat is pretty standard: mostly hack n' slash with some semi-useful prayer spells that I frequently forgot to use.

On the other hand there are disappointingly several ways that the designers lock you out of accessing certain content in a given run due to some very unclear or needlessly strict conditions.
