First of all, while the full title for this game is "Is It Wrong To Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Infinite Combate", I will refer to it as DanMachi, the short name for the anime, as the original English one turned out to be quite long. Anyway, anime fans have probably heard about the anime before. Unfortunately, I don't watch a lot of anime, but, on the other hand, I absolutely adore anime games. Thus, I jumped at the chance of being able to play DanMachi on PC which combines visual novel elements and a dungeon crawler.

Whilst I didn't watch the anime, the storyline of the game and anime are identical, although there are extra scenes available after the main plot that are completely new. However, I am not able to compare both stories, and thus, this review only represents my experience purely based on the game without any prior knowledge.

Gods? Monsters? ... Dungeons?

DanMachi takes place in a world with gods that live on Earth and provide challenges to the villagers. The main protagonist, Bell, aims to become a true adventurer and happens to meet Aiz one day. He immediately starts to admire her due to her strength, however, is way too shy to start a conversation with her so he immediately ends up running away when he spots her. Aiz is greatly bothered by Bell's behavior as she doesn't want to be seen as a scary person. However, there are still other things that plaguing her and while she tries to apologize to Bell, he focuses on catching up with her to become a strong adventurer.

From Zero To Hero

Something I noticed immediately is that the plot itself is quite clichรฉ. Most shounen anime have the same concept of the protagonist being a loser at the beginning of the story whilst the girl is utterly strong and saves him every time trouble comes up. This game is no exception and follows the same concept. However, I guess Bell is not a loser per se but just lacks experience which he quickly gains throughout the game. Usually, it's not possible to improve with the speed he did and, unfortunately, the game never explained the reason for that either.

Two Different Perspectives

I really liked that this game told the story from different point of views. Whilst Bell is the main character, Aiz has her own chapters as well, although the last chapters are solely dedicated to Bell. Anyway, the game basically just showed the player what Aiz was up to after going through the events with Bell. However, the story didn't seem repetitive at all and even when the very same scene gets showed twice, there is still a lot of difference as the game itself focuses more on the thoughts of Aiz instead of the happenings, which the player already experienced anyway.

This makes it feel like Aiz and Bell being the main characters, however, I found that a lot of other characters had a lot of screentime as well and could easily be considered as main characters as well. That being said, after completing the main story the player can freely switch between Aiz and Bell, while the playable character depends on the current chapter during the main story.

Is it Possible To Date The Girls?

Well, not only the girls! Almost all characters that often appear have their own date events the player unlocks after completing the main story. However, to get the fancy of the girls, the player has to complete quests to earn so-called date points. With these points it's possible to buy a date, although each date gets more expensive the more are unlocked. While the date scenes are quite short and not fleshed out, I still loved to get additional content with this game, and fans of the DanMachi series will be delighted as it's not entirely the same as the anime.

However, when changing to Aiz, she can date various characters as well. Yes, even the girls! Something I really appreciated here is that there are CGs available here the player can unlock for their CG gallery. It's important to mention here that date points, as well as money and items, don't carry over, and thus, Aiz has to collect them through quests separately from Bell, however, by the end of the main story I was already used to it anyway so it wasn't a surprise to me.

Is This Game a Visual Novel or a JRPG?

Actually, I would say both. Before entering a dungeon the player reads through the story first before they enter a dungeon. After leaving it, a cutscene takes place once again. In total, the player has to enter the dungeons two times per chapter. That being said, I found both aspects well-balanced and never got bored of the story nor found the gameplay tedious. On the bright note, grinding is not necessary in DanMachi at all, although the player can go through side-quests if desired.

Crawling Through Dungeons

So, DanMachi worked slightly differently than I assumed when it comes to the gameplay. Instead of the traditional turn-based dungeon crawler games, this game implements real-time combat. Dodging and careful attacks are mandatory to survive. But that's not the only unusual thing. When getting thrown into a dungeon, the player has to fulfill specific requirements. For instance, defeating a certain amount of an enemy or reaching a floor. Once the objective is completed, the player gets teleported out of the dungeon and can pursue the next task. I am used to having to complete the whole dungeon with all floors, even after completing the objective in dungeon crawler games, so that was a nice change.

There is no difficulty setting available in DanMachi, however, the game itself isn't very hard. Whilst I had some difficulties with the bosses and ended up dying a few times, it was simple to defeat them once I figured out the pattern of their attacks. As I like to enjoy the story without worrying a lot about the gameplay, I actually liked this aspect.

Keyboard Controls

I would like to adress this point as I read a few complaints about the controls. Unfortunately, it's not possible to rebind the keybindings, however, I didn't have any issues playing with the default ones. The only thing I noticed is that it was quite uncomfortable when I had to use the cancel button as it's far away from the others, but luckily this didn't have any affect on the battles at all so it didn't bother me a lot. Anyway, don't let it discourage you to give this game a try.

Graphics and the Immersion

First of all, I absolutely loved the graphics of DanMachi. During the cutscenes this game looks exactly like a visual novel with character sprites and CGs while the characters are displayed as 3D chibis during the actual gameplay parts in a dungeon. I found the chibi style extremely cute and even most monsters had a cute design. Whilst the enemies are reused pretty often throughout the dungeons, the bosses have unique designs I couldn't help but admire at times. In addition to that, this game contains voice-acting, with even the protagonist being voiced, which greatly improved the immersion.

So, what do we have in the end?

DanMachi is truly an enjoyable game even though I never watched the anime. However, I'm afraid the identical story might be a downside for those who already watched the anime beforehand. Nonetheless, the gameplay makes it up to the player more than enough. If that's not already enough of a reason to give this game a try, there are a bunch of lovely girls available here who are just waiting for receiving enough date points for some action. That being said, I'm positive fans of the DanMachi anime will be able to enjoy this game, as well as newcomers who are not familiar with the series at all.

Never before has a game title sparked such a heavy, philosophical question, and then proceeded to interest me with lovely girls. Nice work here!

Looks like the mix of genres worked out pretty well for the game in the end.

Thanks for the great review!
