there's a robot character who allows you to roleplay as a soviet soldier sending anti-tank dogs to their deaths, except you're sending a fish to suicide-bomb anime women.

Despite my big gripe with the developer team's reliance on AI for voice acting and some assets (disappointing from the perspective of both an artist and a consumer), I do think it's one of the best modern competitive shooters—at least among those I've played.

1.The focus on modifiable loadouts (think old-school Battlefield or Team Fortress) instead of rigid, one-dimensional hero systems (think newer Battlefield or Overwatch) not only adds gameplay depth but also removes the frustration of being locked into characters you'd like if only they had a different weapon. While weapons are class-specific, each class offers various types, from ARs to shotguns to melee weapons like sledgehammers, riot shields, and daggers.
2.Making the game an arena shooter with multiple lives encourages players to experiment with niche or funny loadouts and tactics, unlike games where deviating from the meta is harshly punished.
3.Widespread terrain destruction/modification significantly extends the fun you can have on a given map (we're currently sitting at five maps) and allows players to genuinely turn the tides of a match.
4.Deep character customisation not only lets you create a truly unique contestant but also complements the class system really well. All cosmetic items are shared between classes, so you never feel stuck playing a character you dislike simply because you've obtained or purchased skins for them.
5.Overall, the theme of a virtual contest feels very refreshing, and the bright yet realistic graphics will help the game stay visually appealing for years to come.

However, there are a few things I dislike:

1.As mentioned before, reliance on AI normalizes such behavior, which not only threatens certain jobs (voice actors, artists) but also falls flat in execution. I can't think of any memorable lines from this game, whereas Deep Rock Galactic, Team Fortress 2, Helldivers, and even Overwatch are gold mines for iconic lines within their communities. It's unfortunate because this is the only truly negative aspect of the game.
2.Battle passes, while offering more in-game currency than they cost, are sadly time-gated. Not only can you not obtain items from previous seasons, but you can also lose out on items you've already bought if you're not dedicated enough. This, combined with the significant grind required to complete "bonus pages," creates a negative experience for completionists - if you're one of them, good luck.

This review was negative two (2) times.

First - Sony demanded a mandatory PSN linking, which, before the announcement, was skippable. Due to the sheer scale of the review bombing, their reverted their plans, whilst blocking 177 countries from being able to purchase the game

Second - Arrowhead has proven time and time again that they didn't know how to balance a game, nerfing anything that would be popular, being oblivious to the survivorship bias, along with not testing their development, resulting in various crashes and bugs. Similarly, due to complaints being seen in various places on the internet, Arrowhead took their time to not only make sure their most recent update wasn't broken on launch, they've actually listened to the feedback the community have been giving them for months, and balanced the game according to the them.

So, following these paragraphs, it's time to give a proper review.

Helldivers 2 is the most fun I've had in years, combining meaty gunplay with heavy and meaningful movement that gives the characters weight but also agility, a balance so many third person games lack. Combine this with two (at the time of writing) enemy factions that differ in tactics both they and you employ in the fights and add a spice that is huge explosions coming from the sky, in various shapes, sizes and demolition power, and you've got the meatiest action movie-turned-game on the market.

At this point, ♥♥♥♥ Wolfram. It's one thing to stop updates, releasing only teasers. It's also one thing to ♥♥♥♥ up a game on release and fall into a pit of sadness, but the fact this guy did it twice is just ridiculous. I recall him saying how he couldn't have it on steam as early access (years ago) because that would mean he'd have to update it constantly (German law). Now it seems he released it only to get some cash and abandon the project again.

I honestly am starting to believe he'd abandon the game even if the release was phenomenal.
