Had this one on my wishlist for a little while, finally jumped on it and I'm glad I did.
(Wrote more than I expected to, see TL;DR.)

Some people seem to have a problem with how heavy-handed the "meta" aspect is - my only issue is that there's no real need to ignore the narrator, outside of a natural curiosity to explore. He indignantly overreacts to your disobedience... and there's only one point later in the game I can recall right now where I actually really questioned an order from him. No big deal, still enjoyed the game, but some more story development would make me enjoy it even more.

ICEY is tagged as a Metroidvania, I wouldn't go that far, I don't think it necessarily has all the Metroidvania elements but it does have that sort of feel to it. (This game reminds me of others like Guacamelee and Valdis Story, but much more casual, especially in terms of plot.) The combat is a lot of fun, I'm such a sucker for getting a character who can be quick and have lots of maneuverability. ICEY has a bunch of different attacks to choose from so you can fight just about however you want, and the combos are satisfying. I did play on the normal difficulty, not sure how the higher difficulty level compares.

I noticed in some reviews people were complaining about the narrator, I gave the English one a chance but definitely ended up preferring the Chinese VAs. It can be tricky at times to be reading the subtitles and playing/fighting, but once you spend enough time exploring you'll become more than familiar with the dialogue. I was fine with it but I know some people are pickier than others when it comes to subtitles.

One last thing I'll mention, once you reach checkpoints you can travel back to them at any time. This will sort of do like a soft reset on that checkpoint's area, meaning you can benefit from secret areas again, and also bosses come back - so you can go duke it out with your favorite bosses whenever you want.

TL;DR
Overall if you like platformers with a hack-and-slash, Metroidvania feel, give ICEY a go, especially if you can catch it on sale. Comes with free OST and a small DLC addition, not a bad deal at all.
