There are no other games like dwarf fortress. It is as simple and as complicated as that. Dwarf Fortress is one of the most important video games ever made and one of my most favorite. The first few fortresses you make will be terrible but through that you will develop your own unique fortress strategies. Every time you lose you're left with "if only I had done X sooner, then I would've made it" or "what if I had done X instead". Before you know it you have started the next fort and it is somehow 4am. And that is just fortress mode.

You'll never be done learning the game and it isn't about racing toward any one goal. You make your own fun in dwarf fortress in the most natural way; it truly feels like playing in a sandbox. It is hard for your imagination to not take over, dwarf fortress gives you just enough information that you can't help but fill in the gaps. The stories that come out of it you will remember for the rest of your life.

While not utter unplayable garbage this game leaves a lot to be desired. A lazy attempt at a sequel with almost no new or interesting bells and whistles. Gunplay remains somewhat in tact but the level design does not lend to fun fights. A couple of pretty set pieces do not make for a game. The story jumps from bullet point to bullet point. Hardly ever lingering on what just happened before quickly moving on to something else and then before you know it it's over.
