Not a great rougelike for the fully initiated. It feels like a slower and diet version of Enter The Gungeon with the lack of character variety, metaprogession systems or variety. I understand the game is early access and I am hoping to make this review reach the developers to add a few things.

TLDR for those who don't want to read: Axolotls = class loadouts you build via resources you grind and cook, gun variety is lacking until you hit a certain area in the game to unlock the gun store in your base, game doesn't feel rewarding enough to those who desire a true rouge like experience like Risk of Rain 2 or the nurturing base building side of things like Cult of The Lamb. Feels like a slower, easier diet version of Enter the Gungeon.

Starting weapons: They're great, it's odd that these guns need to reload, when the ones in run don't, speaking about them. . .

In-run weapons: The weapons you find in the game, especially if you are not familiar with rougelikes will be the exact same weapons for a lot of runs. Sometimes I find it frustrating to find the same ensemble of six guns over and over again.

Axolittles/Axolotls: The main selling point to some people has found it's way to me, endearing at first, disappointing once I found out what they actually are. My first axolittle I got was a dragon one, and I was honestly so pumped up to have some rad dragon powers mixed in with my tiny murder child of a lizard, however that was not the case. The entire system of nurturing and raising axolotls will end up just being a grind fest for loadouts. Yep, you heard me right, load outs, you mix and match cooking recipes to give your axolotls various skills that you can select from with no variety whatsoever. They are simple rougelike mechanics like rerolling items in your chest and your healing methods. which, in my opinion, is a good idea to have healing as a option, not as a mechanic, HOWEVER at the cost of losing the choice of having unique classes and builds really does leave a sour taste in my mouth. If I wanted to feel accomplished for earning skins in a game with time investment, I'd play a game like Risk of Rain 2, which rewards me with a skin for completing a run in a higher level of difficulty or unlock classes like Hadean Tactics, which rewards me for mastery of a certain class through wins or experience.

Grind: AK-xolotl feels like it is going for what Cult of the Lamb has successfully done, but again, dieted it down, there is a resource grind, however unlike COTL, you are unable to choose between locations to start off in, nor is there any guarantee that you'll be able to cook meals for the skills you want unless you pour endless hours into multiple runs. I find it that I would scour about 10-15 materials of the biome's respected ingredient if I finish the location, which isn't bad, until you realize you need to get multiple ingredients in 2-3 areas unless all you want to do is spend your thousands of leaves on spicy salad to give all your loadouts a free item chest refresh for every area once. It feels repetitive and the lack of gun and game play diversity and fighting the same (albeit unique) bosses really doesn't help.

Trust me, I wanna love this game, the art styles, funny characters. intriguing enemy design and various adorable little axolotls do try to grip me in, I can not help, but find the game very disappointing in a multitude of ways.

Oh, and one more gripe, I'd like to have a inventory menu to view items, it's really hard to remember every item in a long run and sometimes I like to see if I can run some synergistic items together (though calling them synergistic is a rather overselling thing to say.)

It's a good game, just not for me. The builds are super simplistic in the game and the art is just okay. I'm just not a huge fan of the battle design.

Putting this as a digestible bite for people unaware about the game and it's current ̶g̶r̶o̶u̶p̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶b̶a̶b̶i̶e̶s̶ controversy.

Game has a new character costume (these costumes change abilities and stuff, you don't get new characters), some entitled people are big mad that the male character wears a jacket with a exposed chest and stomach when the female character who is dressed as a DIVER in a DIVING SUIT is not allowed to as well. Not only does it not make sense in the context of the game, why should they fire an artist over this?

The game is superb and the story telling is amazing. I play on mobile so say that as you will, but everything about this game is such a good follow up to their previous games.

This is a good rougelike

Smooth graphics, wonderful visuals, interesting premise and message. The music is to die for, I love just relaxing to the music while beating up the enemies. The weapons are extremely unique.

Early Access Review
Just as good as legion rising, unique classes, can get slightly more frustrating, but with updates slowly rolling out, I think it'll be even better than the og
