This is without a doubt my favorite game of all time, just for the way it tells its story. It expertly uses the medium to tell a narrative that I don't think would be possible any other way. It's a unique experience in the truest sense of the term and in my opinion one of the finest works of science-fiction ever created.

That being said, this game's commitment to its own vision makes it incredibly inaccessible to the average gamer. Just like the frail creature you play as, you will suffer and feel your frustration build to a point where it becomes almost unbearable. If you can stay determined and master its unfair mechanics and cryptic nature, Rain World delivers a catharsis that is simply unmatched in gaming. This game does not even once hint to its own depth and instead requires you to reach out and discover it.

This game can be spoiled. Do not look up more than you have to. Good luck and enjoy the ride.
Games I consider truly special
This is my list of favorite games that create an experience that is unique in the genre. They are not necessarily the most fun games I've played, but they show that videogames can be more than just entertainment. All of these felt important to me in some way and I wish I could experience them again for the first time.

Rain World
The most unique game I've ever played. The unforgiving mechanics pressure you into a state of mind that is then exploited meticulously to tell the game's remarkable narrative. Rain World doesn't hand you anything but offers an experience of incredible depth to those willing to make the pilgrimage. If you can stay determined despite the brutal unfairness, you will have a journey like no other.

Portal 2
The perfect sequel to the incredible prototype that revolutionised puzzle games. Funny, epic, and enjoyable the entire way through. It's the only game I consider to be flawless.

Return of the Obra Dinn
A breakthrough in storytelling. Clever and unique from top to bottom, this game is true innovation. This is a story with twists and turns that lets you, the player, do the gradual reveal of what's behind the curtain.

Little Big Planet
The result of AAA devs actually being able to fulfill their artistic vision. Boundless creativity and love in a high-budget production. This game is just dripping with charm.

Undertale
The iconic subversive RPG. Turned every trope on its head and made it cool. Fun characters and great music make this a really memorable and quirky experience.

Kenshi
Janky and rough, but incredibly compelling. The sheer scale of the world is haunting. Kenshi's map is entirely desert and yet still deeply infused with mystery that keeps you exploring for more.

Darkest Dungeon
An RPG experience that is dripping with flavor. Punchy and epic in its storytelling of a classic eldritch tale, with the pacing of the story actually fulfilling the dreaded grand reveal that is so classic to Lovecraft's work. Worth playing just for the narration.
