SYNOPSIS:
ASSESSMENT:
Guess the flag is a nice little budget quiz/trivia title for anyone who enjoys geography or is a flag hobbyist. The game is easy to pick-up. A good number of modes help break up any monotony. Alternate scoring/timed variants increase longevity and replay value provided by main game modes. Production is extremely basic and no issues were experienced during play.

Overall if like me you enjoy trivia based puzzle games and are a fan of the subject matter, this could be something to MAYBE consider.
STATUS:
Complete. Unlikely to get any more content updates
APPEAL:
Made for fans of geography and vexillophilia
VALUE:
Full price is pretty fair, though a sale to match your expected play time will be better

CONTENT:
► x6 GAME MODES allows for a surprising amount of different challenges, even of half are variants of each other. Of the other x3, two provide some long-term engagement.
► MATCH THE NAME is the main mode and the most straightforward. Requiring matching the shown flag with the correct name from a set of four multiple choice answers.
► MATCH THE FLAG and TYPE THE NAME are alternative variants of the main mode. The first being the reverse of matching the name from four flags and the latter being the hardest requiring the name be typed using predictive text.
► NAME LOCATION stands out as geographical regions are shown on localised maps, with the correct name needing to be chosen from those provided. Some of the red coloured target regions are so small its takes some time to locate them
► DAILY CHALLENGE provide a single puzzle to solve. This time with a hidden flag, divided into six parts that are revealed with each mistake made.
► The RANDOM mode offers the best longevity by including a continuous set of shuffled puzzles from each mode to diversify the challenge.

ATMOSPHERE:
► AUDIOVISUALS are low-grade. The VISUALS including sadly the maps are extremely basic. The tinny sounding guitar SOUNDTRACK is probably apt for the game, but that is all. The cheering SOUNDEFFECTS induce a feeling of accomplishment, but little else. There is no VOICE ACTING.

MECHANICS:
► The way each QUIZ is divided into global regions restricts the questions for that particular challenge. Allowing players to work on missing knowledge in manageable steps. A 'World' region that encompasses questions for all regions provides the ultimate test for when players are ready.
► By including countries, autonomous regions and much lesser known organisations, the test provided are diversified a little more and the scope of the challenge rises too.
► The use of PREDICTIVE TEXT for typing modes is a great help with spelling of more obscure answers or for those that may need assistance. However, it does not always provide the answer being looked for.
► HEALTH (LIVES) allows additional guesses after making a mistake or two. Lost HEALTH can be re-earned by going on sequence of correct guesses. The question must still be answered correctly before progress can occur.
► Each mode provide has a SCORE or TIME variant that allows player to change how they play each mode. Get the highest score or play for the longest continuous time without losing all your health.
► HIGH SCORES are kept for each mode. Answering all possible questions correctly for each region sub-game will display a gold trophy to show its been cleared.
► CORRECT ANSWERS are given once a game is failed, so the player can commit it to memory and learn something new for next time.
► Due to its FIXED DATASET of 255 countries, islands and international organizations, no additional questions are likely to make it into the game at any point in the future.
► Some MULTIPLE CHOICE answers aren't of the same region or type. Allowing the correct answer to be deduced more easily than it should.

EXPERIENCE:
► GAME LOOP is extremely tight, focused on the choosing the mode and answering the questions until either completing the full data set for the region or losing all lives.
► GAMEPLAY has a tempo defined by the player and a REPLAY VALUE restricted by the data-sets used for the questions and answers.
► The UI is very basic, embracing the simplicity of a mobile game design.
► The undoubted REPEITION of the concept is somewhat placated by the VARIANTS.

COMPLEXITY:
🔶 ACCESSIBILITY - There is no real explanation of mechanics beyond the obvious. The simplicity of the game and the basic design of the UI allow for it to be picked up very quickly.
🔶 DIFFICULTY - Depends on the gamer's knowledge level of geography and vexillology. As someone with a passing interest in the subject matter, the game was is a mix of easy answers and obscure ones. The fun is in learning those unknown facts.

STAYING POWER:
🟨 REPLAY VALUE - Each mode and variant is self-contained, but designed to be fully replayable - until all answers for that mode/region have been given.
🟨 LONGEVITY - There is nothing to discover long-term for the core modes and regional subgames once they have been completed and fastest times set. Achievements look completely straightforward. The daily challenge and randomised mode do promote continued play at least until fatigue sets in.

PRODUCTION:
🟣 QUALITY - Low budget production with bland visuals for a limited experience.
🟣 OPTIMISATION - Runs without issue.
🟣 STABILITY - No crashes experienced.

MISC:
🟣 SETTINGS - Can only set the language, while the audio and music can be turned off or on.
🟣 CONTROLS - Played with almost entirely with a mouse. Needs a keyboard for the typing modes.
🟣 STEAM - Has overlay functionality, screenshot capture and achievements.
🟣 MOBILE PORT - Could be mistaken for a mobile game, but there are no IN-APP PURCHASES or P2W.

When I was very young we had this UK Geography game on the Spectrum 48K I think. All you had to do was name the place on the map but I used to spend hours and hours on that.

I actually quite like educational games like these. Of course, I forget them pretty soon though. It seems to have enough modes to keep interest and has achievements so I'll pop this on my wish list and get it if it is cheap enough.

Thanks :)
