¶ Shogun 2 is a masterpiece of strategy gaming. Set in the brutal, war-torn era of feudal Japan, it throws you into a world where every decision can mean the rise of a dynasty or a dagger in the back, it offers an immersive mix of grand-scale tactics and intricate battle mechanics. The campaign map is stunning, with dynamic seasons, misty mountain ranges, and cherry blossoms falling as your armies march to war.

¶ The real-time battles are breathtaking, especially when you're surrounded by a full enemy army, have only 5-7 units of Bow or Yari Ashigaru, and still manage to win after many failed attempts using different tactics.

¶ The diplomacy system actually matters here. You can’t just bribe your way to alliances like in some other Total War games—you have to plan every move carefully, or you’ll find yourself surrounded by vengeful clans that see you as nothing more than an upstart warlord. The economy is more punishing than in Medieval 2, forcing you to carefully balance military expansion with infrastructure, trade, and food supplies. Expand too fast, and your realm collapses. Procrastinating too much? Get ready for an unstoppable enemy juggernaut.

¶ The animations look great—some of the best in the entire series. Fall of the Samurai is a must-have expansion if you love the Boshin War setting or are a fan of Rurouni Kenshin manga/anime. Rise of the Samurai? Meh, it’s okay, but it lacks the same weight and tension as the base game or its superior expansion. It’s a decent addition, I guess.
