ICEY is a sort of hybrid action side-scroller "beat 'em up" style game with a narration that guides you along, if you so choose to follow. The choices you make will change what happens, and you can discover some interesting extras by doing things differently than you are asked by the narrator of the story, kind of in a similar way to something like The Stanley Parable.

Since I like metroidvanias, I would like to point out that the metroidvania tag is incorrect on the store page. It is by no means a metroidvania.

When you start out, you are asked a series of questions, and these questions will determine your difficulty. I only played this game on easy, and even died one time I think, so I'd imagine some of the higher difficulties could be pretty challenging. I don't really generally play harder difficulties unless I have a reason to, since I prefer for things to move along, and I can get frustrated easily. It's a relative term anyway, since some people are better at certain genres, and might prefer more challenge.

The first thing I noticed when I began playing was the fluidity of movement, and the flashy graphics. I had a lot of fun exploring and using various moves and such as I got going. The narration is very busy in this game, and it can be pretty fun discovering secrets or finding extra money in various nooks and crannies while progressing. There are auto-save points with little stations that you can buy upgrades to your moves as you collect more money, giving it a very light RPG element as well. Some spots will create teleports (though I don't know exactly when they are created until I check through the menu). You can go back and re-battle things for more money, and collect the same special gold stash spots over and over, if you wish.

The narration is nice, and keeps it interesting as you are moving from spot to spot. There is some humor as you move forward (or choose not to), especially if you decide to disobey the voice. I was reminded of a lot of things that were very similar to some of the situations in The Stanley Parable, for instance.

I used a controller, and the confirm and back/cancel buttons were reversed, but when I switched controller schemes in the menu (from PS to XBOX), it seemed to make it normalized for me, so I didn't have to really adjust, but I do remember other games where I had to do this same kind of thing on occasion. I was extremely impressed with the responsiveness on this game. I find myself having some gripes with many platformers or fighting or action games where sometimes the timings won't always fire off with the right precision, but not once in this game did I notice anything like that happening.

The story is a bit of a reference to The King in Yellow, but I cannot really comment a lot on this, since I haven't read it. The plot itself is pretty interesting, since it seems to be layered, with the underlying narration and sub-plot sort of thing going on. It is intriguing, and I think it does accentuate and make the overall experience better.

It seemed a little bit short, or maybe I just got very absorbed in gameplay, since I finished the entire game in two split sessions. Something that keeps me playing is definitely a plus as well. I'm trying to think of any negatives besides the overall length, but it's not very easy to really do. The game is great, and I think most people would really really enjoy this.

Pros

Very nice graphics, and a smooth and bright look to everything. Characters, bosses, enemies, and environments are extremely well done, and solid.

The music has the techo kind of feel, which works with the overall setting of the game. It's a little strong, but it fits the game style very well in various areas of travel.

Fluid movements with controller. I really have to give this the highest mark I can as far as that part goes. Great responsiveness!

Fun mechanics with fighting. Damaging the bots and then breaking cores to regenerate, then using chains off of those was entertaining, and helps if there is a momentary lapse or struggle in the fights. I like the flow and balance as I played.

The narration aspect is a great touch. It makes it stand out from the average action game, since there is an extra voice that accompanies you as you travel around. Some nice gags and other humor as you make varied choices with progression. There are a lot of little hidden things one would miss if they treated it as a straight linear adventure. Most just unlock achievements, but they are fun to find, nonetheless, and add some depth to the overall gameplay from this standpoint.

Cons

Maybe one or two spots with grammatical errors, but they are not glaring. I do not even recall what they were, but one near the beginning, and one towards the end is all I caught.

I would have liked this to be a bit longer, since it was such a good game to play. Everything I did spend time on was quality though, so it's hard to really complain about it. I would have liked the price to be a few dollars less due to the amount of time I spent, or have a little more content.

Some extra enemy types would have been good to throw in the mix. Small gripe, but I have to try to find something I'd like changed up. What was done is very good though, and the bosses are all unique.

I would have liked a manual save. I don't think there was a way to do this in the game.

Maps are great. I almost always like maps. This wasn't too crazy though, and it's not something you'd get lost in, by any means. Pretty straight-forward, as far as that goes.

Conclusion

Anyone who likes hybrid games, and fans of The Stanley Parable might enjoy this quite a bit. The action and fighting elements are fun with this game. This is not a metroidvania, as is listed in the tags on Steam! Progression feels smooth as you move through the story, and there are not any real hiccups or lulls. As mentioned above, the controls are great, the narration is a nice touch, and I would have a hard time being critical of much on this game.

Almost anybody who likes this general style of game really should play this. I'm extremely satisfied with my experience on the game. It has made me pause a bit and think about things overall as well with my own self.

Maybe you will see it as "ICEY" it.
