Multiplayer play is all segregated. You can only play with people on the same operating systems as you and even where you purchased it from. Those who purchased from the App Store can't play with those that purchased through Steam. Those on Linux, can't play with those on Windows or OSX....

Sure, how about a post by the studio themselves admitting that they have per-platform and store multiplayer.
