Ingredients
1 large pickled cabbage (or fresh cabbage leaves)
500 g ground pork (or pork + beef)
100 g rice
1 onion, finely chopped
2 tbsp tomato paste
Thyme, dill, salt, pepper
Smoked bacon or ribs (optional)
Water or tomato juice
Instructions
Sauté the onion in a little oil until soft.
Mix meat, rice, onion, 1 tbsp tomato paste, and seasonings.
Separate cabbage leaves and cut thick stems.
Place a spoonful of filling in each leaf and roll tightly.
Layer sarmale in a pot with bacon/ribs if using.
Add remaining tomato paste mixed with water or tomato juice until covered.
Simmer gently for about 2.5–3 hours.
Serve hot with sour cream and Mămăligă.
